My darling insurers have decided to pick a company to repair the car which is miles and miles away. Now - they have called me and said they are picking the car up tomorrow. When I asked about a courtesy car, I was told that they have 8 hours for getting the car on site to get me one. Giving the distance and me having no car - I asked if they dropped it off "if we have driver availability". Given tomorrow is xmas eve they almost certainly won't have.

Now - because of the time of year, I think it's going to take a while. Leaving me with no car.

What are my options here? I think you can pick a repairer yourself, but the insurers have already appointed these jokers. So far I'm not overly happy with thme. Why can't they just drop the courtesy car up when they pick mine up...

Any experiences? And I NEED a car over the holidays, without it I won't be able to get to the gym or see family and friends.

If they don't have a driver - and I get a taxi can I claim this back from my insurers? It would be around £100 I think.

Not if I'm going to be waiting around for 8 hours. It's xmas eve - I might be sad and come on here when I'm bored, but I don't have time to spend 8 hours sitting around.

If they are your insurers then I guess it will depend on the contract small print - I don't see there will be any laws that govern this other than contract?

There is nothing in the small print - it just says I get a courtesy car. Which I need. I'm more concerned that they are going to mug me off here. Can see me without a car until after new years.

How badly do you need the car?

Is there anything you could do to preoccupy yourself for those few hours while you're waiting for the car to turn up?

It's not ideal, but I've found myself having to walk around town on more than one occasion when something has taken longer than I expected. After doing a bit of shopping, having a coffee, etc the time passed pretty quickly.

I have no problems waiting for 8 hours - my concern is if as it's xmas eve no driver is available... Then I could be with no car until after new years.

Is your vehicle roadworthy at the moment?

If so tell them to collect it on their first day back as it will only sit in the compound for 2 weeks now anyway.

I'm not sure I quite understand who is doing what here. Are the repair company picking up the broken car and responsible for the courtesy car? IF so phone them and ask for specifics. Or phone the ins co and go through the events with them?

Is it censored? If so steer clear, they're an absolute shambles.

I had the same. They collect the car then have 8 hours to sort a car from Enterprise. I was told I'd have to collect but after loads of shouting they sent someone over with the car but I had to wait the 8 (business) hours, so it was next day and they were 3 hours late even working on a 9-5! the deal of them dropping a car was I had to drop the lady back who brought it over - 30mile round trip!

They then sat on my car for nearly two weeks before they even started the work. It was about 4 weeks all in that they had the car and I had the nasty hire car. My car only needed a wheel and small scratch repairing (pothole damage). When I collected my car back I had to take the hire car to Enterprise and they gave me a lift to censored. The hire car was taken away before my car was brought around for me to see. My car appeared and the lower splitter was missing off the front bumper. Took another 4 week for them to source a new one.

To top it all off, after 8 months the paint on the front bumper started to peel. I decided to live with it as I couldn't cope with dealing with them again.

Anyway, if it was me (I had no choice at the time as company car). I'd be using my own garage, however you may not get a hire car approved if you do!

No names please.

I had similar many years ago, out of desperation I called the body shop for advice and they were great. They knew exactly where the hire car was comming from and gave me a number for them, I called them and they told me roughly what time the car would be there. The body shop even called me to let me know the car was there when it arrived earlier than originally planned.

Still meant a long bus journey, body shop was 70 miles away, but at least I knew what was going on and could organise my day around it. The insurance company were unable to provide this kind of info so dealing direct with the people doing the work seemed to help a lot more.

Who's fault was the accident OP? If not yours I would just hire an equivalent car locally and make the cost part of your claim.

Make them aware that you are entitled to and will require a courtesy car. Let them know that if they fail to provide one, you will use public transport and taxis to make your journeys and simply claim back from them. Add a (reasonable) bit for the extra time and hassle of each journey.

Keep your costs down by using public transport where possible and taxis where not and you should be fine reclaiming. If they don't play ball, use money claim online.

It was my fault.

I called up the insurers. Got put through to a separate legal team dealing with it who are a different company, then o another company who they have subcontracted it to... Who then checked with the garage. Only to be told that it probably will be okay. So I've decided I'll just hope for the best and deal with the worst when and if it comes.

Don't even know what hire car I'm getting. Would be good to get something nice - but I'll settle for a 15 year old ka at the moment.

Not good - once they had my car they said they wouldn't give me a courtesy car until the 29th. I've had to pay over £50 for a taxi to go and get my car back. I need a car to get around. Fuming. Too annoyed to even think about writing a letter at the moment. After all their promises yesterday. The joke is they had even recorded the promises as notes on the system. Complete joke.
