Fuel pump issue

Had a strange problem yesterday, went to take the chim out for a run, went to start it and no noise from the fuel pump but it did start but wouldn't tick over like it wasn't getting enough fuel.I went to find out what the issue this was morning, fuel pump starts and so does the car. Just wondered if this sounds like it may be a relay issue and if I should swap them? Or does it sound like it may be something else?

My immediate thought as I was reading was "immobilser".

I got stuck at a roundabout recently. Stalled the car in the middle lane of 3 and it wouldn't restart. Felt very stupid, phoned my TVR guy who said "try locking and unlocking it, then try again". Dd the trick.

You should get a pair of relays spare at the ready

I bought two and used the old ones as spares in the glove box

I got a fuel pump somewhere if it is that you can have, but its normally stty terminals/relays

Thanks alex and qbee. will swap relays as soon as possible, is there a tell tale sign if the pump is on its way out? It's not any mouser than normal, I will check the connections tomorrow.

Hi, I suggest that swopping relays won't provide you with what is wrong? A dc check of each relay will?

The recommend option is to replace both relays.............if they have not failed,so be it, but they will do sooner rather than later, plus you will have piece-of-mind, IMHO?

Give the connections to the pump a good brite clean with coarce emery paper. Pump and connections are very exposed to salty road dirt. Also Check there should be 11 plus volts getting to the pump.

Might be worth checking / changing the fuel filter as your initial description would suggest some restriction in fuel supply rather than none at all.

Thats exactly what it seemed like Richard but my reason for thinking relay was there was no noise from the pump and as mention previously the relays will go at some point so may as well change them as they are cheap, looks like I'm going to have plenty to do over the Christmas break. I do have a fuel filter in the garage so I will change that aswell. The engine needs a service but it should be going to Joolz at kit and classic in the new year for a stealth cam and a remap of the 14cux which I understand requires an oil and filter change and as its winter it will hardly move over the next few months. I have rover gauge but I don't think it would help with this issue.
