Hi all,

I'm looking to put away around £250/month into something that will give a decent rate of interest. At the moment I am putting it into an ISA, but the interest rates have made me think that surely there is a better option out there.

As far as timescales go, I won't need quick access to it and I am looking to save this monthly amount for 10+ years.

Should I stick with the ISA? Or is some sort of regular savings account the way to go?

Overall aim is to have a decent amount saved for when I leave the RAF (12 years time) which can be put towards a BTL/business.

depends

short term save it where gets the best returns

However once in an ISA you can move it around other ISAs as the best deals come up

if you miss a years ISA allowance you can't get it back

theres no right answer

Income stocks IMO. 4.5% yield at present.
Depths of 2008 the average yield only dropped 13% even though capital dropped more. So long term its a proven winner.

ISA or SIPP wrap. SIPP benefit is you get your tax back so that's even better value.

Over a 10 year period equity will always beat cash.

Stocks are currently high , so not the best time to begin, but start you should, you will not regret it.
Think global, you can still invest in UK, maybe half, but diversification is key.

Some years better than others of course but the FTSE "dogs" are generally ok - 3.04% this year as of now.

An alternative is to pay more, reducing the mortgage - if you have one.

Ben,

I'm a retired rockape, practically all of my clients are crabs. If you want a steer, just drop me a line and I'll happily natter to you for a bit - no obligation, no cost. What part of the country are you? Or, if you're on Prune or the Goat I also tend to lurk on there quite a bit.

Happy Xmas.

This is good advice try HL they have loads of info on different funds you can invest as little as £50 a month you could pick 2 and put £100 into each and forget about it. Have dividends reinvested and keep an eye on it once in a blue moon.

Hi Ginge, I'll make sure to drop you a line in the new year, appreciate the offer. Approaching the half way point of my RAF career and it's suddenly hit me that I will need more than the gratuity and pension if we (family) are to live the life we want.

As others have said, the only 'better' option is to take some risk and start investing. There is no magic bullet to acheiving better returns than cash in a risk free way.

If you have a 10 year horizon then you should be able to ride out any market ups and downs, in fact saving regularly is great for this as it average out your purchase price.
