I'm a fan of BMW I think that within the sector of car I need, a family saloon they are the best at the job so much so that my next car which I will be getting in the new year is a no brainer, another 3 series, maybe a faster one but still another 3 series.

This will be my fourth + a Z4M.

Then I took notice of a new C class today, I really liked it and it got me thinking about a change but I still keep coming back to another 3 series, I seem to be brand loyal.

Can't just be me obviously.

Why do people stick to a brand or is life too short?

Not just you, since passing my test eight years ago I've had an E34, E36, E39, 2 E46s, E30 and now an E65. Just feels right!

Wouldn't own anything VAG as they're a bit generic with all the platform sharing, and the Mercs I've been in have felt surprisingly cheap. Would consider an LS Lexus but I do quite a few miles so can't really justify a stonking V8. Next car will probably be an E92 335d.

Like you I was minded just to get another 3 series and found that due to the good lease deals that the C Class falls into my budget for a company car, so I have ordered one instead. Prior to the 3 series I had an A4 and a Passat before that (all estate models). I just like a change each time I get a new car, so loyalty doesn't really come into it for me.

Since giving up a company car in 2001, 3x BMW, 3x Audi, and 2x Jaguar. The Jags have been the best for reliability and driving experience.

No such thing as brand loyalty these days as the new, digital age enables people to be more informed and make their own choices. Most people buy what they need for the here and now for the best price. Only exception is luxury goods where people are buying into a dream and if they can afford it, they will buy it again and again.

And no, BMWs, Audis and Mercedes are not luxury goods. The gen Y people cannot tell one from the other, they buy what their mates buy.

BMW seems to do well out of brand loyalty.

Most people I know that have a BMW have been driving them for years. They've got plenty of faults but most seem to forgive them come new car time.

If I had more money to waste on cars I would step up to a Porsche but in the BMW price bracket nothing tempts me.

3 x Mercedes
2 x BMW
1 x Jeep
5 x Vauxhall
2 x Mazda
3 x Ford

Plus several old st.

Oddly, Vauxhall have been most trouble free, Mazda most boring, BMW blandest, and Jeep strangest.

I've always stuck VAG/ German and will likely continue to do so. No specific reason why but can't see myself changing

So I believe, it's the first time I've stopped and looked at a Mercedes as an alternative.

The low rent toy tablet semi-glued to a random place on the dashboard put me off. Skoda have a better one properly placed for a lot less money.

I keep reading comments about this tablet thing on the C Class, but TBH the one in the 3 series doesn't look that nice either, nor the one in the A6 I was also considering. I just accept it and move on, IMHO the rest of the interior looks pretty nice to me (OK it's not a Bentley, but then I'm not likely to ever have the budget for one either).

Not my own car, but I found this picture while researching colour and trim choices:

This is actually quite an interesting topic.

Part of it will of course be about the way that car company goes about things. BMW well known for being more driver focused, and I'm sure to some extent on average this is true. However, that doesn't mean that EVERY BMW is more focused that EVERY Merc/etc/etc/etc

But then on top of that it's some interesting psychology. Once we own one particular brand (or car), we like to convince ourselves that it's better than any other (because it means that we made the right choice), and then psychologically it's easier to continue under that assumption, rather than question it and thus have to question the initial choice.

In many ways its similar to people who believe irrational things, many times it's easier to carry on the belief even in the face of evidence rather than admit that you were wrong in the first place. That's not saying that the initial car choice was "wrong" but psychologically it can feel that way.
