Anyone else experienced such a thing? I'm interested to hear if there are many other saddos out there doing this.

Had an encounter earlier with someone in a pretend police car. Or at least I think I did. I found the whole thing pretty confusing.

Was driving along an NSL road tonight when I came up behind a 12 plate black Mazda 3 that had been tarted up to look like an unmarked car. There were 2 huge aerials centrally mounted to the roof, and a rolled up hi-viz jacket on the parcel shelf (naturally). But the numberplate was totally different to every local police vehicle I've seen, even unmarked ones here have the same reg. prefix on them.

The driver was dithering about at 38mph, so I pulled out to overtake. I was in the work van so it was a slow overtake, but a clean one. Que the sudden barrage of headlight flashing from the dhead as I'm slowly pulling past them, this continued once I'd completed the overtake, and about half a mile down the road where the NSL turns into a 30mph through a village where they start flashing me again. I genuinely wanted to hear they had to say at this point, pulled over to the side of the road to see them slow down behind me, then as I stuck my head out the window, the driver sped up whilst they started pointing a wagging finger at me and drove off!

Just seems like really fking sad behaviour to me, I wonder what they get out of it. Reminds me of the plastic paramedic episode on police interceptors a while back. I made a note of the reg no, wondering if it's worth reporting. I'm unsure if multiple headlight flashes constitute getting someone to pull over or if they were just losing their st, but I can see how someone could have been fooled by their car.

You should have given him the v's if you were certain it was a fake police car. Real BiB would stop and give you a talking to a fake one would have the wind knocked out of the sails of their "victory". Then of course report them for impersonating a police officer.

I used to see a sad old tt on an old K1200 with a hi vis jacket and some nice stickers pretending to be a copper in sussex a lot. He'd do 40 in a NSL and then speed alongside you if you overtook shaking his head. All very odd.
I don't see what they get out of it, I'm embarrassed for them tbh.

I have to admit we do seem to have a growing culture where people get very irate when others don't want to drive as slowly as they do.. It seems very odd.

I've had it a good few times when I've overtaken on an NSL and the overtaken car has had a hissy fit. (I was within the speed limit and on a clear stretch of road). I once even had a car start moving across the white line to try and stop me from overtaking.

I think a lot of people need to watch some old episodes of 'Only Fools n Horses' (or other suitable comedy) and just flippin' lighten up!

There's a guy I saw driving around Manchester with "ANPR" stickers all over his car. I think he was under the impression that ANPR is a generic term which encompasses any vehicle fitted with a Halfords dash cam!

I'm very conscious that people of that variety probably have some dashcam running, I remember an old youtube user called "RoadCamera" or some crap like that filming all sorts of misdemeanors and overtakes whilst narrating it all in a suitably nasal voice. Cringey.

I was in a fully liveried up company van, so couldn't go OTT, but I really wanted him to explain what the hell he was playing at. Shame he didn't stop.

He would have really flipped his lid if I shot past him in my loud lairy yobmobile. hehe

I can picture it now. Some fetching hatch markings on the back of the bike I bet. biggrin

It's rather sad isn't it. Depends on the area of course, in Shropshire it's got really bad, always tends to be older people who do it. As opposed to South Wales, where I'd see the likes of knackered old plumbers vans almost on 2 wheels, clipping apexes with racing driver precision.

I've had similar. Battered P38 range rover, aerials all over the back, orange amber on the roof, hi viz, etc. Seemed too old to be a motorway maintenance car and was a v8 to boot. Took umbridge to me passing him in Lane 3, it seemed he wanted to move out himself from lane 2 (without indicating) and didn't check his blind spot properly. When I went past, i had a lot of finger wagging, and he started to speak into his radio handset.

Saw him later on down the motorway hassling someone else, up their arse in Lane 3 in heavy traffic.

Very peculiar and a bit sad really. One life live it, my arse.

There is one near where I work. I often see it parked up when I'm working but I've never seen it on the road. It's an old Mondeo - dark blue, two outsize aerials, two nearside wing mirrors, fake repeaters front and rear and a hi vis jacket hung over the driver's seat. Some effort has obviously been put into making it look like a police car, so much so that it looks nothing like a police car.

You jumped the que!!! How dare you, He was on the road first so he gets to choose the speed of every preceding driver until he decides to give up that right by turning off. Do you not know this is how it works?
In all seriousness though anyone doing <45mph on open NSL roads should be shot immediately I'm sure if their family had to follow them they'd understand it's for the greater good and people doing between 45 and 50 should be forced to sit a speed awareness course to teach them the benefits of traveling at a reasonable speed.

Wonderful!! I used to do that when I was about 4, pretending to be Poncherello from 'Chips' on my little bicycle with 'spokey-dokies'...

I get the feeling some of these folk would keep Psychotherapists in work for an age. biggrin

That sounds even more tarted up than the Mazda 3 I came across! Pitiful.

I am okay with all of this. People are so self-absorbed. It's even more fun on narrow country roads, where they just pootle past passing place after passing place. Never ending.

I was once stopped by a "policeman" who started by asking me if I'd been shopping and what I'd bought! I asked him what he wanted at which point he got back in his (police) car and drove off! Quite bizarre.

Is it technically illegal if the car doesn't have the police livery? I didn't think it was - I hope not anyway! I have a silver Cat C Superb with white flashing LEDs in the front grille. My mates and I have pulled over quite a few people for failing to purchase a decent car, and more often than not driving inconsideratly (50mph).

There's 2 round here that spring to mind.

One is a weird old guy with a mustache and those tinted spectacles that make you look like a paedophile, who drives a white Volvo T5 estate complete with several antennas on the roof, high viz jackets hung on the seats, additional wing mirror, and spotlights behind the front grille. The car is so old however that it beginning to look really quite tatty so I doubt he is fooling many people.

There's some other berk around here that rides a white Honda touring bike complete with battenburg pattern down the side, reflective chevrons on the rear of the panniers, high viz jacket and plain white helmet. What a bellend.

I completely agree when others say that these type of people probably have serious mental problems of some kind and would cheerfully keep psychiatrists in business,

You definitely can't do this.
