Genuine Question.

I am looking to downgrade, I normally part exchange to save the hassle but the car I have now is worth around £2000 more at p/x price than the car I am interested in replacing it with.

Is this going to cause a problem as I doubt many dealers want to pay people to take a car off their hands when they are trying to make money from selling a car to them?

Cheers

They give you difference. Don't worry about them, they'll factor in profit on one or both ends of the deal as it suits them. I did the same thing, got £9k back.

Your p/x will be instantly worth £2k less. As you have said, very rare for dealers to want to give you cash.

Dealers do give cash on a trade in if they think they can make money on the deal. No different from taking a part ex and some cash really. Depends a bit on the garage but any place with a reasonable turnover won't struggle to find £2k.

Bend over, you are about to get shafted at both ends of that deal!

I was in the same boat last year. Trying to unload a £12k pickup to "buy" a £3-4k barge. No dealer wanted to play so had to sell privately, which I was not overly comfortable doing with that sort of cash.
I know some bigger dealers will do it though. When I was working at a Merc dealer we took in a Bentley Continental on exchange for an E class. So must have given the customer about £40k at least.

They'll generally only offer cash if it's something they think will be easy to move on (with a decent margin).

Simply isn't true, I've worked for small dealers, big franchises and never known any garage turn down a deal as they won't give cash back. In the unlikely event the dealer can't afford the balance, the vehicle will be underwritten before the deal us concluded.
As for the other half of your quote, I chose to delete it as it was tripe.
