Be warned there can be no conclusion to this thread! - as I just saw it in the street and took some pics. Looks quite curious - my initial thought was a speed camera type thing cos of the rear window. Any rear window like that in a van makes me suspicious wink

I was trying to decide whether the side windows were bullet-proof or not - they seem quite thick? Or is that normal. Not sure.

The funny thing is, with the different locks it looks quite secure, yet the original vw drivers door lock is unchanged - hardly secure?! Whaddya think?

Or it could just be a Caddy Maxi with extra locks fitted?

Probably a high-value courier/cash courier. How thick were the windows? They could be hardened against tools etc rather than ballistic.

I reckon it could be used for moving things around that too big for a car, that might have some value hence the additional locks...

Has the looks of a private ambulance to me, although those do tend to be more Vito size as a rule.

I think that's the type of van they use to transport gourmet buffet food to the customer's premises

I'd be more worried about the fact you don't seem to have a reflection.

I presume you are euphemising 'undertakers first call vehicle' there , which is a perfectly adequate and none grizzly description of that role

'Private Ambulances' as operated by a CQC registered Ambulance Operator tend to look like Ambulances ...

Yep, although all the local undertakers vans round here have "Private Ambulance" on little stickers on the back.

As you say the 'real' private ambulances, for those that are worth working on, usually look little different to the real NHS deal.

This. You've taken a picture of a standard VW van with some extra locks fitted.

That van with decent wheels and a petrol V6 engine and seats in the back could be the perfect car for me. Huge boot too.

not that visible but if you look at the roof there was another round thing that I presume is a gps tracker - it's round. Not necessary for a normal van that an owner has fitted extra locks too.

could well be an GPS ant on the roof

vent + locks + gps suggest some kind of higher value cargo

but no tetra / PMR aerial and the OP makes no mention of extra lighting ... suggests not emergency services related

Interestingly, Caddy rhymes with Baddie and a famous baddie is Hans Gruber from Die Hard. Die is the feminine definite article in German, and Germany is famous for Oktoberfest. Oktober is a month that starred in the film 'Hunt for Red October' [sic] featuring a Russian submarine. Submarines are commonly dark grey in colour and can have a number of locked doors. Based on this information, I'm going to say that the van shown is in fact most likely the fictional submarine 'Stingray'.
