Have puzzled for a while what actually constitutes car ownership. The reason for this is that Mrs DIW and I own more than one car, and I can never remember which is registered to who. We are both insured to drive all of them, and we share the running costs. The only thing that is unique to any of them is the name on the registration document, but that only proves who the registered keeper is, not necessarily the owner.

We each have what we consider our daily driver, but we do swap from time to time, and I was wondering what would happen if I ever get pulled over, as the copper's first question is usually along the lines of 'is this your vehicle sir?' I'm worried I might fail the attitude test if I responded to said question with 'I'm not sure' or 'depends how you define ownership' as the copper would probably think I was trying to be a smart arse.

Just say it is "either mine or my wife's, cannot remember who actually owns which car" I am sure they will be fine with it.

My OH and I swap cars a lot and we do not share the same name (not married)but all our cars are registered to same address. Am sure that will be sufficient.

Whoever paid for it, unless they have given it to someone else.

No different to a washing machine etc.

When I was stopped in my company car and they asked who's it was, I told them it was mine and it was a company car. They didn't ask for any more info than that.

Except that we have a joint account and all running costs and expenses etc come out of that, so technically we both paid for them.

For husband and wife, I would assume that it's as good as joint ownership, otherwise divorces wouldn't be so complicated deciding who gets what.

Then its jointly owned. There is no official ownership other than the proof of who bought it.

Having a registered keeper, the need to have insurance etc makes it feel like there is someting more official about ownership, but its no different to anything else.

Are you seriously saying that you cannot remember which car is registered in your name? Wow. Talk about third world problems.

Just put a post it tab on the dash with hers or mine written on it. I think yours could be the Seat according to your garage if that helps.

Unbelievable.

Look beyond the wording of the question and seek the purpose of it. "Is this your car, sir?" means "have you stolen this car, sir?" or "do you have permission to be driving this car, sir?". The copper doesn't want the ins and outs of your family history, he just wants to know if you're going to cough for nicking a motor and, consequently, cough for anything else, like the dead hooker in the boot.
The answer is yes, it is your car. You own it, you keep the keys in your house overnight, you drive it without seeking the permission or leave of anyone else, you pay (at least in part) to both the long and short term running and you'd expect to benefit financially from the sale of the car. It's yours, you own it, don't give any answer other than "yes, officer, it is", when asked.

Simon.

For the purposes of a Copper stopping you, the answer is yes it is.

As mentioned already, say yes.

Maybe it's because there's very few proper pistonheads actually left on this site that people feel the need to mock the OP but I would say DIW35 probably has a little more than just one SEAT in his garage, lol.

Quite the reverse, it's because we are true PH'ers that it seems almost inconceivable to me to not know who's name is on the V5 and who is the main driver on the insurance.

But maybe it'd just me.

I'm pretty sure the Lambo is registered in my name, but I haven't a clue about the other two. And whilst the Seat is my daily driver, it may well be registered in my wife's name for all I can remember.

If the cars are so trivial to you can't remember who the RK's are, how do you remember stuff like when their MOTs are due?
