Hi, I for some reason didn't spec the rear park assist on my car, I mirrored a spec of my old car and the dealer forgot to put it on and I foolishly didn't question the order form thinking it may be standard.

Now is it possible just to retrofit the rear as its on the plastic trim at the bottom?

Or do I just leave it....

They don't retrofit parking sensors on any of the Porsches I've owned. I don't expect 981 is any different.

981 sensors are mounted on the plastic rear diffuser instead of the bumper (987).

I suspect retrofit is possible with a new rear diffuser and sensors .. won't be cheap though.

i was told by the dealer that retrofit was possible. Mind you he also told me that the third year warranty was compulsory (which it isn't) so I wouldn't be sure he's right.

You could also check if it is easier/cheaper to fit the rear view camera (on the basis you have PCM).

Unless things have changed with the new Porsche cars, i.e. those launched since VAG bought them, they used to be built with a wiring loom specific to the car.

So, retrofitting requires new loom as well as the reversing sensor bits. No doubt it can be done, but prohibitively expensive.

I have rear parking sensors on mine and found that you only get audio warning beeps and no visual indicator unlike when you purchase front and rear sensors!

I must admit my salesman didn't mention this to me otherwise I would have ordered both as the visual guide I found useful on previous cars

Retrofitting parking sensors may complicate your warranty

Had rear parking sensors fitted to a boxster a few years back at a local audio place, great job & worked perfectly, no way would it invalidate the warranty!

I hope that's the case. I'm now running an older Porsche but in the days when I bought new the warranty terms were very strict with the cars having to be exactly as they left the factory for a warranty claim to be considered e.g. an after market audio system could invalidate an engine claim

They wouldn't let us have the extended warranty with third party parking sensors fitted.

Thank you, I may try the camera option. I wonder if that can be done easier than the sensors.

Does anyone have this on their 981?

Thanks

This will have the same warranty implications as the car will be non standard.

Back to your original question asking for thoughts on whether you should add parking sensors / a camera to the car or leave it - if it were me I'd leave it and keep the peace of mind that the Porsche warranty will bring. A colleague had a Porsche engine go pop out of warranty hence my caution!

Strange! I sold mine to an OPC & they sold it on with a 2yr warranty...

No manufacturer would stand a chance in court if they tried to void a warranty claim for an engine failure because of an aftermarket rear parking sensor!!

As you can see, we didn't get that far.

^^^ This

If I had anything aftermarket added to the car the key thing is not to let muppets start cutting into your wiring loom. Make sure the added equipment is "stand alone" and just needs a 12v supply.
