Discussion
Prompted by a couple of things. Firstly, related to a discussion I had with my girlfriend about interests & priorities. Secondly, I spotted this post in a recent thread -

I don't think you have the property to keep a car like that imho
For the purposes of the discussion, let's assume that the area in question is a nice one, semi rural etc.Strange results so far given it's supposedly a motoring enthusiasts forum.
I don't buy into the house-is-my-castle thing, i could probably afford to buy a house that's twice the "value" of the one i've lived in for the last 8 years, but there's really no need unless you view a house as a status symbol. It's big enough, it's in a decent enough area, and i spend more on red wine every month than i do paying the mortgage

Not really though is it. You can be a motoring enthusiast without it being your financial priority.I don't buy into the house-is-my-castle thing, i could probably afford to buy a house that's twice the "value" of the one i've lived in for the last 8 years, but there's really no need unless you view a house as a status symbol. Plus although your situation sounds great, I'm not sure it is representative of the majority. Particularly under-40's raising a family.

I know.
That's missing the point.
Hence the title - you have two choices, which of the two do you choose?
Well, the point is you don't need to choose. Money spent on a car frequently has no relationship as to whether it is boring or nice. That's missing the point.

I can think of many expensive, awful, boring cars - in fact the roads appear to be full of them!
An interesting car doesn't necessarily mean an expensive car.
'Nice' houses are almost always related to price
FWIW, I probably already fall into the 'okay house' rather than 'nice house' category, and while I like my cars to be interesting, I don't spend loads on them. I do spend around 7 weeks a year skiing, go sailing and compete in various motorsports tho. The house is just somewhere to keep stuff and sleep.
I doubt anyone will be lying on their deathbed saying "I wish my house was bigger" or "oh if only I'd cut my grass more often"

I'd always strike a balance, but as someone said above "nice" doesn't have to mean "expensive" when it comes to cars. Most of the cars I'd most like to own aren't worth a significant proportion of the cost of even an average house around here.
I can't see myself ever spending a huge amount on a car simply because there's so many great cars which are cheap.

I live in small 2 bedroom semi-detached house worth about £120k. (It's also the only house in the street that hasn't had the wooden window frames replaced with pvc)
My current car is a 2009 Porsche Cayman S
My previous cars have been:
Lotus Elise SC + BMW 320d
BMW M3 (e46)
BMW M3 (e36)
I think that puts me firmly in the second category......

House first, always.
I like a spacious, well-designed environment with lots of amenities.
I also like cars but they are not a priority.
I do Consultant work for a Developer and we are working on a £4 million house now - the owner is a young chap who drives a VW Golf. He also likes cars and plans upon getting something very interesting in a few years but right now, he is putting every spare penny into his home. I subscribe to that way of thinking too - albeit on a far lesser scale at present!
