With a £2500 budget alone for the car, here's my situation

Keeping the car for a year/2 years, would you remap a tdci zetec s, or get a zetec s petrol

Note you can get better Zetec S petrols cheaper than TDCI's.... ( less than £2500 )
& bearing in mind I'm not getting the car for another 6 months so prices may go down a little

HOWEVER, here's the catch, I have done 16000 miles in my 1.2 corsa first year and it's a petrol.. I do some
Motorway miles on weekends for work ( about 100 miles usually )

Please note this is not like my other threads, it is taking into account if it's worth getting the petrol or the diesel based on how many miles a year I do and if i could get a better petrol version for the price

If you're doing work miles then these should be claimed for. At your budget, get the petrol.

I'm doing similar miles to you in my M5.

Oh and getting a diesel and remapping it at your age will not do your insurance premiums any good!

I still don't understand why you need to change car every year. It's an expensive business, especially at your age.

Petrol every time with that mileage. Work out how long it would take you to spend £2500 difference in fuel.

The op only has a 2.5k budget the price difference isn't 2.5k. Personally I'd go petrol at that age

Not everyone claims that they have had their car remapped, but yes atm looks like the petrol is the better option

I would not withhold that information from your insurance company. Just because others have done it doesn't make it right. You really are better off with the petrol. Less to go wrong, sounds better, isn't a diesel, doesn't stink, isn't a diesel, isn't a diesel and it isn't a diesel.

No worries. It must be Christmas, I'm being nice biggrin

When you do get your next car though, keep it for a few years. You'll appreciate the car you get after it more, will be able to afford a better car, have more experience etc. I've been there, done exactly what you want to do. I was lucky that insurance was A LOT cheaper 16 years ago!

Aren't diesels cheaper to insure?

No necessarily. Plus at 18 pretty much nothing is cheap to insure! The potential for failure of diesel components far outweighs the slight insurance saving cost, if any.

There's diesels.....And then there's the PSA 1.6 TDCI

If there was an engine to avoid like the plague, this would be that one!

I didn't know they were trouble and I've only read bad things on here about the Peugeot, Citroen, Mini petrol 1.6 turbo. Especially the early ones.

I'd still get the diesel unless they can go wrong beyond the point of economical repair. Maybe 'basher' can tell us more? You're doing so many miles I'd pay the extra to get one and chance that you'll have to pay extra for repairs in a few years on top of the normal stuff.
Diesel 1.6 will probably do about 45mpg in normal driving, and the petrol about 35mpg. Remap complicates things further and I honestly wouldn't remap a higher mileage car you're asking for trouble. Especially from the turbo, clutch and injectors.
Just my opinion it would be good to hear from lots of owners.

I Assume you haven't seen the Ops last threat about The zetec s not having a 6th gear and him being worried about it

Years ago my ex had a tdci zetec s fiesta and it was brilliant on fuel. I once took it to Skegness (around 85 miles each way) it was mainly A and B roads and mainly just over the speed limit. It did 73mpg there, admittedly on the OBC (never 100% but it wasn't miles out) and on the overal trip it was high 60's.

Driven right they are awesome little things on fuel. Her mate had the petrol version and she was getting mid to high 30's.

A diesel for that budget would likely be trouble. Those engines don't have the best reputation and any issues would likely negate any savings to be had from fuel economy. Get a petrol, it'll save you money on the long term.. The petrol won't be too bad on fuel on the motorway

in all fairness i ran a psa 1.6 for over 100k miles in a peugeot partner, never had a moment of bother thanks to routing and proper servicing.

the one thing that tends to kill them is poor servicing and not using the correct grade of oil in them. other than that tough as old boots

Petrol as a cheap DV6 engine is a ticking timebomb. They need scrupulous servicing to ensure reliability and most at that age won't have had it.

A petrol Zetec also is a sweet little thing and pretty economical with it.
