Straightening badly bowed necks?

Just bought a lot of old mandolins,banjos,banjolins etc and a few of them them have neck issues.A few beyond truss rod adjustments.Anyone tried any diy cures to straighten necks?.Ive read about heat being used and clamping the neck and drawing it straight?Any diy fixers in here?;-)Thanks
