I'm looking for something to fill the gap in my garage. I already have a sports car and a daily driver/runabout and am looking for a good gt cruiser type car. Something with a bit of quality and ideally sub £17k, preferably £15k. Ive done the 928 previously but that's about it so I'm after something which would perform a similar task of mile munching for weekends away, touring etc. Whats out there that I could buy that isn't at the end of its life, would be a good drive, looks respectable and would be a reliable companion?

This. The M5 and M6 have such a nice noise, especially modified, that I'd probably buy that if it was my money. It's like they just lifted the engine out of a Gallardo and stuck it in an M-sport five series. Downsides are the range on a tank of fuel is below average, any 'M' specific parts are probably crazy money, and the gearbox is worse than any modern dual clutch.
Possibly an early Maserati Quattroporte is available for that price? Personally I'm not keen on the looks so maybe a Maserati 4200 or 3200?
S or CL class AMG? For me it's got some cheap looking bits of trim/buttons, but otherwise it's not a bad looking luxury and powaaaaaaaah hybrid. The V12 Biturbo is no doubt insanely expensive to fuel, but it's ridiculously powerful if that's what you want.

My Passat CC 3.6 v6 GT would be more than suffice for your needs ..............paperbagnot as prestiges as everything else that's been mentioned but it's a good looking comfortable GT doesn't cost the earth to run

A Jaguar XK, XKR or perhaps an SL500 would fill that spot admirably. All would suit for a car that is both comfortable and great to use every day, but feels special and drives well.

At the very least, I would think at least 8 cylinders and rear drive to fit the definition. I certainly don't doubt its ability, but the M6 is 10x the car IMO.

I would go for a CL500 / 600 and you can probably get a SL for that too.

priorities: nice badge or a good drive?
roof-off ability?
handling?
I think as you've got the Griff you might miss open air touring?
with the Griff still in mind, is mpg important for long journeys?

A shade over but given the time of year I'm sure a deal could be struck for 17. '07, 46k.

What a design!

Not a GT car though... Just a badge idea from German marketing people.

Thanks for the replies so far, keep them coming as its already giving me new ideas :-)
I don't need it to be a convertible, in fact I would probably prefer a coupe really.
The driving experience is definitely a consideration but as a tourer not the be all and end all I guess.
Are the Maserati 4200's reliable enough at say 50k miles?

My friends old man had a few. Actually started with 3200's and they gave him so many problems it was a running joke. But the 4200's he had seemed to hold up well and we almost never heard of issues.

Sound bloody gorgeous too

Probably because it's just a better looking version of a family saloon. Much like the CLS. Yes, the CLS is stunningly good looking (and more special than say, the CC). But the XK/SL/whatever have that something extra.

I've always been led to believe that the running costs are on par with Ferrari - any truth in that?
