I don't need another watch, I'm very happy with my sturdy datejust that has never let me down and I simply don't see the point in having a collection of very nice things that only see the inside of a safe. However, I have been thinking of late a nice dress watch would be the type of thing I should own.

I like rolex as a brand, and I love the cellini range so while up in Glasgow day I thought I'd go see if they had any in the jewellery quarter. They did .

However, I was disappointed (relieved) to see that rolex have totally changed the range. No longer are they the wind ups of old, they're now basically oysters in jazzy cases. Very nice but not what I'm lookng for.

So it turns out they had this in laings.

£4300 cry

Apparently it's been worn once by the director at a rolex event, they made it sound like it's like the watch version of a car dealer pre-registering a car.

There's lots to think about-least of all I know basically nothing about the watch, the seller, the brand etc.

But my god do I like it.

What do the watch gods of PH reckon?

I really like this model cellini:

Superb value for a hand wound white gold rolex. Rose gold version looks great too.

Ok, that's the danaos, the actual watch I thought I wanted in gold or rose with a brown strap. Unbelievably laings had one of those in too-the watch I wanted!

However, trying it on it just didn't feel right, the Cestello I like however just felt like a million dollars (or four grands worth anyway).

I left my card with them as I honestly feel it's a lot more than I wanted to pay, if there's anything they can do I could always raid my piggy bank to match it.

There are lots of concerns but those are personal questions for me only, mostly would I really be happy with such an expensive bit of kit sitting in a safe & hardly being worn.

Looking at these watches , I think you get suckered in by the cheap exchange rate on eBay, I'd really only budgeted £2-3k for one but does anyone really buy watches from the USA via eBay?! Part if me agrees with the above, £4k is really cheap for an 18K gold rolex that's pretty much unused but it looks very expensive compared to a second hand one off the bay!

I didn't even ask the year of it, though it doesn't come with a manufactures warranty they would put a 6 month one on it.

The blacks and white one is nice.

You did ask
hehe no problem, it would be a funny old thing if we all liked the same thing-personal taste I'm not concerned about. But do you have any opinions of the brand or the retailer?

As I said above, I know nothing of Cellini other than I like their designs-however I'm sure I could find something aesthetically pleasing for a much lower price-is an 18K Cellini worth the extra?

Yes I'm sure it hasn't been "in" for some years now, in fact I even got a platinum wedding band to go with my stainless datejust even though I initially wanted the traditional yellow gold band but it just felt odd and didn't look right.

Anyway, before trying on I would have been adam et I would have wanted the white gold or white/rose gold combi but for some reason this one just stood out and looked amazing (obviously in my personal opinion). Also, there's no way it would ever be worn regularly-it would be more of a special occasion thing so I can live with something a but more ostentatious than I would normally wear.

I like it a lot and assumed it would cost a lot more than £4300.

I really like this one, however:

I know it's an acquired taste and usually I hate watches like that, but it does appeal to me. I have no idea what the RRP is though!

The prince above is really nice with an awful lot of history to it, but is much much bigger than appears in photos. You can pick them up for around £7k I think second hand.

I'm in the position you are that I wear a stainless Datejust every day (mine's a 16030 and slightly older than yours and on a jubilee bracelet) but I'm starting to think that a bit of gold would be nice for the odd occasion...

Cellini is a great range... I hesitate to say 'entry level' dress watch from a very reliable brand with a very reliable movement and superb company quailty control. If it's going to spend it's life in a safe (please don't, wear it all the time!) then you know it'll start every time.

For me Rolex are a maker of sports and casual watches, not dress watches; for that I'd prefer JLC at that budget although it won't get you precious metal! In those terms then, they become somehing of a bargain...

The retail on this particular model was apparently around £7,800, I'm guessing even that us considered reasonable for a 18K rolex?

Also, forgive my ignorance but will the case be plated 18K gold?

Should be solid gold - this is similar model with details:
http://www.farfo.com/menswatches/Page1/rolex_celli...

But don't expect the residuals as on your Datejust as (1) it's a Cellini and (2) it's a yellow gold Cellini. For some reason (Ratner quality 9 carrot (sic) gold plated tat comes to mind) YG doesn't seem popular. However, that looks good on you, it's a unusual dial and the Cellini itch has been bugging you for months so wear and enjoy. Try offering 4000, pre-owned might have some flexibility on the price.

Looks well on you - not a fan of the numbers though (font).
As above, try bartering a little.

I think VC and PP make better (looking) dress watches than JLC ...

Looks are subjective and each have their own design language... however the Cellini range is very well priced compared to its in-house precious metal competition; I really don't like the latest Calatravas for instance and TBH I wouldn't be able to pick a modern dress VC out of a line-up (unless the 1921 or an Overseas model). The JLC Master Ultra thin is a triumph (assuming we are taking dress to be traditional as being no more complicated than having a seconds hand.

Zenith make a lovely simple gold dress watch it must be said.

I find that rather brash but that's just my opinion. When considering dress watches I always ask myself what would it look like with black tie and dinner suit and that would make me think scrap metal dealer made good.
