V8 super coupes, is it a good idea?
Discussion
OK so I have Meg DCI 175. I love the handling, but I don't need the mpg any more so was thinking about getting a Clio cup. But then I watched that top gear last night.
I've changed jobs and now my 35mile commute is down to 6-7miles.
I've always wanted a 8 series BMW, and nice looking 840s are in budget. Although pretty high mileage ones.
Also there's the MB CL55 AMG.
And also the BMW 645i.
I'm looking to spend between 5 and 6k, could stretch for the right car. But prefer to keep some in the bank for the inevitable.
Question 1 is this a bad idea will it bankrupt me ?
Question 2 am I going to miss the handling of lighter hotish hatches and a manual box?
Open to other suggestions, the more ridiculous the better.
Thanks Andy

I bought a 2005 645 earlier this year as I felt that the V8 itch needed to be scratched.
I spent around £7,500 buying the car. My total "unexpected maintanence" was a reverse light bulb, which needed the rear bumper off (not too hard, but not to do at home).
Otherwise, I put 16,000 miles on it in about six months and it was pretty much flawless. I didn't even have to service it as the service intervals are gargantuan. The service due was an oil service anyway.
I'd say I put about 1.5l of oil in it during that time.
It had the Logic7 sound system, great bluetooth (compared to my E46) and averaged 20-33mpg depending on what you were doing. I never loved the auto box, but it worked very well when not wanting to push on. The car handled waaaaay better than any car that size should.
I had to put two rear tyres on it, which were far from cheap, but other than that it was fine.
It was a quick car - you'd get about 350/450 miles to a tank, again depending on driving. Would be cheaper to run now as fuel has dropped considerably in price too.
The boot is gargantuan, the rear seats not so. Felt like a very, very nice place to be. I kinda miss it. Didn't think I would.
They are almost all very, very well specced. I looked into parts prices before purchasing as my other option was an e46 M3, compared to the M fuel was similar but all other costs (tyres aside) were much cheaper.
I would have one again in a heartbeat if the needs were there.
An 8-series I would also love, but I would treat it more like a classic really. It is an old car full of old tech and when they go wrong they do it in a massive way. The V8 not as ruinous as the 12, but it makes a 645Ci seem parsimonious.
Hope that helps

With all the safety regulations these days I have no idea how car makers are allowed to get away with thisNegative Creep said:

I was mostly annoyed with the fact that is was needlessly difficult. I am no DIY mechanic but I pride myself on being able to do the "essentials" of car maintenance in an age when many people seem to have no idea how to check their oil. Really ticked me off when I found I couldn't change a bulb myself

Thanks Jayemm89, that's brilliant info, I'm not too worried about getting my hands dirty. I bought a 2005 645 earlier this year as I felt that the V8 itch needed to be scratched.

Oh I missed that.
Never quite liked the XK, guess I could warm to a XKR. Off to check the classifieds.

In the hunt for a 6 I looked at an old XKR. Terrifyingly fast when it wanted to be, traction control that seemed part time and a ludicrously outdated interior all put it to bed for me.Never quite liked the XK, guess I could warm to a XKR. Off to check the classifieds.

At least with the 645 I had a manual override on the gearbox. I believe later XKRs did also but they won't at that price.

Another vote for the 645 - great cars for the money. Ran one for 18mths, tyres not cheap - £315 each for the rears. Lots of toys, feels good and looks a bit rarer on the road.
Go for it!
I went for non-runflats on the factory fit 19s, wasn't that bad but still not good - about £240 a corner IIRCGo for it!

6 series is cracking value and has age'd very very well indeed.
I can't deny this, but growing up in the 90s means a real soft spot for the 8 series. I'm well aware that it's not a fast car but I love the look of them. And I know there going to be expensive at some point.
Can't get on with the xk it doesn't do anything for me, sorry guys.

Go and try one, we'd all forgive you for getting the 8!I'm well aware that it's not a fast car but I love the look of them. And I know there going to be expensive at some point.

But it's not a modern car anymore....

I just got Conti Sport 285/35/19 for my E63 M6 for £195 each from tyreleader.
Much cheaper than blackcircles.

The CL500 with the AMG kit on is a good choice the 500's are bullet proof
645i again a good choice
840i is a nightmare car
or how about a CLK500 it's still a big car space wise & no problems to live with or if you can stretch get a CLK55
