Taxed my car for 6 months in November, and im looking at shifting it on.

Am i right in saying the tax sticks with the car? So if im going to p/x it, realistically i want the dealer to stick 6 months on the car im buying to balance it out right?

Tax is non-transferrable - you can't pass it on to the next owner.

What a load of bks.

Are people finding that car dealers are less or more likely to chuck tax on a new car then?

This really isn't rocket science. When you sell the car, the remaining VED (whole months only) is refunded to the the registered keeper. Simply sell the car, preferably near the end of a month, and use the refund to put towards tax for your new car.

So has the DVLA saved money by not issuing tax discs and have they spent it all on a whole load of cheque books instead?

The DVLA must be raking in the cash because every time a car gets sold they get 13 months tax not 12.

I bought a car this month. The previous owner will get back their remaining tax from January 1st, but as I bought it in December, I must pay tax beginning December 1st!

I would imagine a high proportion of people will pay via monthly direct debit, hence no cheque refunds required.

Not every time. This can be avoided by selling/buying at the end/start of the month, though obviously that isn't always convenient.

That and the fact that it's no different to the old system.

Why's it impossible?

Dealers, like always, can still tax cars when they change owners. So you can still, if you can, negotiate RFL and get the dealer to pay for it.

Nothing has changed there.

Just traded my car to a dealer yesterday (taxed it for 6 months beginning of Dec). Can anyone advise when I'm likely to get my tax refund through?

anecdotally within a couple of days of the V5c landing with the DVLA,

not forgetting any build up of stuff due to 3 bank holidays (25/ 12, 26/12, 1/1)

Did the trader fill in the Yellow section of the V55 and you post it off to the DVLA?

If yes then any time I guess, if no then the DVLA don't know you no longer have it and you won't get a refund until the new owner registers it. Then you should hope it sells quickly as it's just wasting away on the forecourt.
