About to finish uni and hopefully start a job, i'm looking to spend around 10k on a commuter car.

Criteria:

40mpg on a run
0-60: Less then 9
5 seats
Not boring
Diesel or petrol
Wont go bang

Why dont you just spend 1k on a commuter car and then 9k on a weekend toy

apart from the 40mpg a petrol powered subaru legacy/outback would fit the bill, i guess a diesel one might get 40mpg?

would get you to the office in comfort in all weathers

Audi A3 TDI never saw less than 48mpg plus you can pick a good one up for around 6k

Golf for sure - I've had a couple since finishing uni and they're great all rounders.

First was a MK5 GTI which was awesome fun and full of character, but 40mpg really is the absolute maximum you'll get out of it on an eco-run. I also found I was having to budget £100 - £200 a month for repairs/ maintenance so it was pretty expensive to run. However this was an old 55-plate and you'd probably get something a lot newer for your budget.

Currently running a 3-year old Mk6 2.0 TDI. Bit boring but its loaded to the hill with kit and does 55mpg without even trying, and its nice not to need to budget monthly on running costs! Still quick enough but I would rather a petrol car and I'm only keeping this as I'm doing a lot of miles these days.

Both cars have the DSG gearbox which seems to suit very well and good for the daily commute.

Well it's less boring than the 1.6 version! And yeah they can go bang so a low mileage will be needed

Sounds like you might want to think about a1.8 Civic.

Maybe it's too boring though?
