Wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

I ordered a pair of Vredestein's Quatrac 3 all season tyres for my Mondeo diesel barge yesterday. They have good reveiws, compared to dedicated Summer/Winter tyres, and anything has got to be better than the Teflon Ditchfinders that are currently on the front wheels.

On the Vredestein website, this is what it says:

The Quatrac 3 is the ideal alternative for motorists in a temperate climate who want to drive all year round on the same type of tyre. The striking asymmetrical, non-directional tread with the separate summer and winter sides offers optimal safety and comfort in all weather conditions. The tyre has excellent handling characteristics that are ideal for driving in summer conditions on dry and wet roads. At the same time, the tyre offers perfect grip and high dispersal capacity in winter conditions. Three longitudinal grooves are incorporated into the tread, providing efficient water dispersion.

I also found this picture:

Am I right in thinking the tyre must be fitted with the 'Winter' side on the outside of the wheel in Winter, and then when the weather warms up the tyre must be turned through 180 degrees on each wheel to get the benefit of the Summer element of the tyre?

Or am I thick and have just go the wrong end of the stick/tyre?

Are the arrows the rotation direction maybe?

"non-directional tread" so no it doesn't matter.

I think the arrows are perhaps a touch misleading as you could interpret them as being rotational direction but that can't be what it means on a non-directional tyre.

Asymmetric tyres are designed to be fitted to the wheel in a specific orientation.

I believe you will find that the tyres are marked "OUTSIDE" (maybe inside too) - no, you don't have to change them round.

There is an "outside" label on each tyre to ensure that they're put on properly.

Thanks for all the help. It was the arrows that kind of misled me. I suppose I'll know for sure when the tyres turn up at the fitters smile

we have some of these on the cherokee - they have been great, much better than the Avon rangers they replaced. There was no mention from the fitters of a need to reverse them in cold weather

No, you don't have the flip them around.

I believe that the summer bias pattern sits on the outside because that's what you'll be leaning on more at higher (dry) speeds.

I've had these on my X-Type for the last year / 8k miles and they've been excellent. I've seen several reviews whose findings were of a tyre pretty much as good as a decent winter tyre in the white stuff.

There doesn't seem to be any discernible wear yet either, and my car's the 3.0 AWD version.

All in all, pretty good, especially for the price smile
