hi,
recently had an absolute nightmare with my car key.
My old key (12 years old) finally gave in and wouldnt open the doors. So i have a new car key cut and my immobiliser chip added to the new key. However the key wouldnt work in my car because apparently the barrels are rather worn.

I've seen on ebay that the new barrels and key set is only £15 but i was told id need to get the engine recoded?

Any ideas on how expensive that would be?

Or if i got a new key from ford rather than timpsons, would it work?

To be honest I'd get on eBay and get a new lock set + immob if needed. Dead easy to fit and should cure all ills.

How would you set the new immob up though? Is it registered to the engine or the barrel?
Sorry I'm useless

Same way you did already - transfer the imobiliser chip to the new key

So If i buy something like this, put my chip in the new key and fit the new barrels. It will be fine?

^^^^^^They're not immobiliser keys.

What key have you got op? If it's one like this the transmitter thing is under that blue hatch, you just pull it out and stick it in the new key. If not then the easy way to do it is just to tape the old key to the receiver ring on the ignition barrel, that way the immobiliser is always off though.

yeah when i got my new key done, he took the chip out and but it in a newly cut key. However the new key wouldnt work in the locks. He said that he cut it to how it was meant to be but because the barrels are so worn away it wouldnt accept the new key. So this is whats happened to my old broken key.

Replace barells and disable immob by taping the good key head inside dash near barrel. Alternatively aftermarket remote locking if you have central mlocking and ignition bareell accepts new key as well as passanger lock in emergency.

Yeah they're £15 if you don't want an immobiliser key, do it that way and just tape the old key inside the steering cowling like I said. We used to do it to old fiesta vans that we didn't care about, I wouldn't do it if your Ka is your pride and joy though. Cheapest parts I can see on ebay to do it properly are FORD KA MK1 96-08 PART LOCK SET 2 DOOR LOCKS IGNITION & KEY TESTED AND WORKING , just pull the chip out of the key and swap them over.

The problem people have is that you can only code new keys off of the original main key and most of the time they've been lost, If you lose or kill your key it's not the engine that's coded it's the ecu and that's only a £40 set.. FORD KA 1.3 ENGINE ECU+ LOCK SET+ KEY

^See that black plastic ring above the key in that ecu set, that's the bit that reads the signal from the key and is attached to the end of the barrel. Regardless of what keys/barrels you buy all you need to do is have that chip that's inside the key close to that plastic ring to turn the immobiliser off.

Just a thought, and ignore if you've already tried - but our old KA had a similar problem with the locks gradually getting worse until giving up completely. I'd heard about common issues with locks on KA's due to dirt build up, so bought some lock cleaner (graphite based I think) and it worked a treat. It may not be a permanent solution but the cleaner is only a few quid so might be worth a try?
