Sat in one the other week and loved it. Also in the position of affording one as a DD and as much as 50mpg is nice from the Insignia now Id like something fun to stop me wanting to drive the R8 so much as that's for special occasions.

Anyone driven one?

Don't buy one on the promise of that MPG. I've just come from a 300+ bhp focus ST and that was the same as my current R8 and I know from experience that there was very little in it between the previous shape Astra and my Focus MPG wise. Can't see the GTC being greatly improved. But yes nice car. I'd be interested in a Corsa VXR as a DD if funds allowed.

  1. 2 daughter has a Corsa VXR. 32mpg on a 60 miles per day cruise along the motorway. I reckon you could get that down to low 20s without a lot of bother. irked

I think Roger is referring to the MPG from his Insignia, not the GTC VXR.

Roger, not driven the the VXR version but the wife has the 1.6 Turbo GTC, nice car, good ride but the long sweeping A pillar is a right PITA on vision, I always find myself having to move my head left and right to get a better view, especially on roundabouts if your on the inside lane (nearest the roundabout itself) can easily catch a wheel.

Def give one a good long drive before you buy as you looking at one for a DD

got the astra gtc vxr 18 months ago, great car, brembos stop you in a hurry which is why I currently dont have a caterham embedded in me because there was no way he was stopping in time and 2 into 1 dont go with a single track bridge. MPG is apalling even driving like miss daisy, 25-30 cruising along the motorway - no way it gets close to the claimed 39 from vauxhall. insurance is a blast - 180 quid or so per annum fully comp with protected bonus and all the extras if you shop about. wheels are lovely until they get kerb rash from potholes, seats comfy but firm - you will feel every stone on the road in vxr mode. really got to give it some stick to get the power to really kick in but when it does it keeps going nicely. build quality - paint prone to road rash chips, assembled in poland by people that dont know what panels gaps and shut lines are. toys - plenty as standard and some expensive add ons available. price - dont pay more than 21-22k for a new one, they can be found for that sort of money with the aero pack if you're patient.

Glad you mentioned the MPG. I know a couple of owners and I'm told that they seem to average low 20s (22ish). My wife's S5 does that. Not sure if it's the tune (and so maybe a remap might help) or just a bit ol' bus with a lots of power...

I like them. They are NOT worth £30k though. Or £26k. smile - I really liked my old Corsa VXR (could get 40mpg out of that on a run) but I had to sell it for other reasons. Now in a ratty 2005 Astra 1.6. Economical.. but that's it.

Had the previous generation Astra VXR and over 30k miles it returned 35mpg. It was mapped and running on super all the time though.

Fantastic little car, loved it.

Could see me buying one of the new versions as a DD in a couple of years. Anyone I know thats driven one was very impressed.

Looked at one before buying the St
Paintwork was shocking on all the ones we looked at (including brand new) & prices on consumables were too high for a Dailey Imho (20" tyres & big brakes are nice but expensive)
Some people are bothered about the a pillar some are not it depends how tall you are & if the cars driven hard expect gearbox/ driveshaft issues
Has to have the aero pack too as the ones without look horrid!

Wifey has one. Vast improvement old the Astra H VXR. Front suspension, amazing, no torque steer. A very fast go-kart. Due to the way it puts the power down, it's quicker off the mark than the R8, but only 4 pots, so keep having to change gears.

How the hell did you do 50mpg? Ours does about 23 average. Good fun though. Equipment level better than R8.

Nice second car I'd say, (or third in our house as Antara 4x4 is my daily hack).
