Its that time of year again where I have to hand £500 over to the government for them to put in their pockets and not fix our awful roads.

I understand that now its all done online but as I was rummaging through all my car documents (for something unrelated), I came across the log book...

I was shocked to see that it turns out I never sent it off to the DVLA!

Its still in the old owners name, signed off with my details filled in as the new keeper - and obviously finding this has made me realise I don't have a valid log book for it and I assume that technically I'm not currently the registered keeper of my own car.

I've called the DVLA but they're closed and with my tax renewal date fast approaching (I think its tomorrow) I don't know what to do.

Do I tax it online, send off the log book, get refunded, and tax my vehicle again losing a month? Isn't that how it works these days?

Also, if I send the log book in dated June 2013 is that going to cause problems?

I fked this one up for sure! mad

You sent the log book off when you bought the car.

It's only now you've come to tax the vehicle you realise you didn't receive one from DVLA and you wonder why they didn't send one out?

The previous owner is supposed to send this off.

You could take the green slip in to a post office and tax it that way.

So far as the fact that for the last 17 months the car has been registered to the previous keeper, not sure.

I could be wrong but..
take the green bit along with MOT and insurance to the post office and they'll ask you to fill out a new keeper form and then they will issue you with a tax disc a receipt

You'll be fine to tax if you still have V5C/2 new keeper supplement on current V5. I'd be surprised if you or the previous owner doesn't incur a dvla fine for not registering change of owner.

Recently bought a car for my youngest. Under the new system of tax.
Went online, entered the number on the green slip & it all went fine.
I have no idea whether this would work for you.

Read that back, have a think about it

I'll give you a clue - what does DVLA currently know wink

Now a fine later on - that'll I'll go along with

OP if you've been a bad boy all parking fines and speeding tickets will have gone to the RK (previous Owner) that'd would have taught him not to duck his responsibilities (sending off the documents)

Green slip (v5c) will allow you to either tax online or at a post office.
We do it a fair bit at work when we've got an iffy deal that might go south, it saves putting an owner on the car needlessly.

If you've had it since June 2013, you must have taxed it already before now, how did you do it last time?

date the transfer as the actual date you took ownership, probably will need to provide a covering letter to confirm it's not just an error

the message from the dvla at the time of the change in rules, any transfer dated before the rule change, would not result in a tax refund be generated, this should still stand, although the chance of a dvla cock up is likely to be much higher in this case

I've just discovered the same thing. I got a car last July and still havent got a log book. Tax runs out on 31st December. Reading this thread reminded me thank goodness smile I re taxed it in 5 mins on the DVLA website using the 12 digit code on the V5C/2. The green new keeper ticket. Had I actually been awake I would have realised that I should have taxed in on new years day because the confirmation states that the tax runs from 1st December 2014... DOH!!

Oh well! Its done now. Its not a daily driver. Its just the family spare hack thats lucky to do 1000 miles a year. I'll remember next time though. Now to email DVLA and find out where my new V5 has got to smile

Merry Xmas folks

Tax it with the current V5. No questions will be asked at the PO counter. Once it's taxed, sent the change of owner part off.

When you bought the car you weren't supposed to send anything off. It's the previous owner that notifies the dvla. The slip you have is the temp record until the new v5 arrives.

If you never recieved one then the previous owner didn't notify a change of ownership I guess?

I made that mistake earlier

I'd still like to know how it was taxed last year and what the expiry date on the latest disc is.

Cheers guys - so, I should be able to tax it fine.

My only problem now is that say I tax it today, and send off the old logbook I have (which, I assume was not my responsibility to send off in the first place), won't I have to retax it again based on the new rules because the DVLA will see it as the car just being sold?

You're right... I have taxed it in the past.

Come to think about it I have no clue how I did it last time!
