Latest 64 plate E350 Estate...initial report

What a motor. Im not a barge man, big estate haulers aren't my thing, but by eck this is a proper automobile. In terms of quality, of actual heft of helm, touch of materials, cabin and just general ambience of all round quality of the car...its way above my SLK55. The roadster is basically a pocket battleship, it really is nothing more than a 15" gun on a frigate. The E is a proper all round quality proposition.
V V V impressed. Frankly lads...the 124 is back.

Good to hear feedback on E350. I'm currently in ML350 and looking to change next year. Have really like the MLs I've had but fancy a change; and your comments certainly wet my appetite!
What options did you add that help the car? A bit worried about losing the confidence of a 4 x 4 (with winter tyres) for Scottish weather. Have you used it in colder weather?
Many thanks.

I've got a new E350 Premium Plus estate and it's a fantastic car, 9 speed auto, effortless cruising, every option imaginable (and then some). I can't help kicking under the rear bumper to open the boot, childish I know.
The only thing I've found to criticise so far is the handbrake release handle, it's a tacky bit of plastic, but if that's all that's wrong I guess I could learn to live with it...

I have had the E320 S210 estate, the S211 E320cdi estate and the S212 E350cdi estate.
I hated the latter, felt really cheap inside and horrible driving position etc. I got out after a few weeks.
But the facelift is a huge improvement, just the pre facelift put me off modern Mercs.
Not saying I won't look at the new E Class next year, but it did sour things for me.

I have the baby 220 facelift estate, I agree the quality post facelift IMHO is Mercs of old.
I recall my late FiL picking up one of the first W124 300E's in the mid 80's and thinking that was hewn from stone, this feels the same. I've had it for nearly 2 years and I must say it has been a perfect every day motor and a great comfortable cruiser. Mine has the 7G auto, which when comparing cars before plunging for the E wasn't quite as smooth as the ZF8 speed in the 5, although the E won the day on overall quality, what's the new 9G like?

I've only had the car a week, and for most of that time it's been parked up on the drive. The 9G box feels very smooth but I've not tried the 7G box so can't compare, I've only only reached 9th once and that was just to check that it was there! Engine revs seem ridiculously low, at 70mph the car is in 8th gear at about 1000rpm, barely above tick over. I think it will be the perfect car for our annual family trip to the south of France.
The box is very smooth. To be honest with the 350 lump and 9 speed it's pretty much overkill. It's a lot smooth than our old ML420 with the twin turbo v8 and 7g but less savage. That thing was a monster, this is much more rounded and a lot lot classier.
As an aside - sunny winter afternoon , wife in over knee heeled boots, mid thigh figure hugging knitted tunic, roof down slk55 using paddles.

According to the official figures the E350 should do 45.6mpg urban, 56.5mpg extra urban and 51.4mpg combined, which seemed too good to be true for a 2 tonne car. I tried really hard yesterday over a steady 60 mile drive, mostly on a 40/50/60mph A road infested with speed cameras, and managed to get just over 40mpg, mixed driving average looks to be mid 30s. Lucky it has a big tank!

My earlier one was terrible on juice, often high 20s, on a very, very steady run sat at 50mph I managed to break the 40mpg mark. Most longer Journeys were around 35mpg, 2mpg better than my long term average.
It likes 40mph, but hardly the point of that car really.
The old man had a BMW 530d GT at the same time, which is a much bigger car, and annoyingly that used to get around 30% better economy at all times.
We followed each other from Worcester back to Norwich and my E350cdi was showing 35mg and his 530d GT 44mpg.

Excuse me barging in but that MPG ,that is sadly why I cant get out of BMWs deisels. My new F30 3ltr worthing and back from west london over christmas 52mpg, and is a 0-60 in 5.6 beastie. if I could get that engine in a Mondeo id have that and save a few thousand pounds.
Happy New year!!
Happy New year!!
Yes, consistent return so far of about 38/9 mpg at 75-80 and 40 at 70-75.
I expect that to improve as the engine frees up a bit to be honest, Id be happy if it nudged unto 42 at 70-75. Given that the old ML used to average around 25 with all driving and 27 tops on an M-way run then this is a big improvement anyway. The 55 can do 31 at a steady 70. And a lot less if one is so inclined
As to the chap who mentioned the 530 GT. The mpg/engine is one thing but just look at that f
ker ffs. And much bigger? Not if you want to get a dog cage in the back it isn't! The E estate packs a shed load more, is much much much more of a handsome beast and you never are almost invisible as opposed to announcing to the world at large that you:
A) are a t

and
B) can't afford an X6

Phew, for a second there I thought you were going to come over all defensive about your purchase, and look a right I expect that to improve as the engine frees up a bit to be honest, Id be happy if it nudged unto 42 at 70-75. ! Firstly, the 5GT is a much bigger car interior wise.
It is actually a 7 series hatch.
I don't cage my dog, I just let him sit in the boot, with the rear seats moved forwards there was roughly the same space as the E Class estate, with them moved back there was less, but then you got somewhere between 7 series SWB and LWB legroom for rear passengers.
I did around 12k miles in the 530d GT and the same in the E350cdi estate, difference was the 5GT was over 18 months where as the E350 was my car and did that in the few months I kept it.
I used the GT when moving my daughter into Uni as the E Class couldn't quite fit it all, the GT is bigger than it looks.
I totally get it has looks that only a mother could fall for. I was just using it as a compassion with regard to MPG.
No need to start saying you only buy one if you're a t
t or because you can't afford an X6. I don't buy my cars depending on what others think, from your comments it is very obvious you do however. Gassing Station | Mercedes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
