Sports exhaust
Discussion
I would be interested to know if anyone else who has had the Bamford Rose sport manifolds, 200cell cats upgrade and isn't that pleased with the noise in sport mode.
I want to make clear I have no complaint with BR at all, they were great to deal with, and I am pleased wilts the quality of the work done.
The problem is after living with the mod for a couple of months now I am finding the noise isn't what I want to have, I have the standard back box, so maybe there is an alternative there.
I have noticed there are a few different back silencer options on the Dave Appleby Engineering web site, and wondered what oppinions are on this route.

I have similar mods on a 4.3 V8V and I love the sound. The 3-way exhaust switch is obviously now very important. If I'm not feeling like a hooligan, have a sore head, have the missus in the car or want to be a little bit more discreet (ie for the neighbours), then I'll put the car into 'quiet mode'.
Is your car too loud for you? If so, changing the backbox to an aftermarket one will only make it louder!
Most of the 'new' sound comes from the 200 cell cats. Have you thought about getting them shielded (in order to dampen the sound slightly)?

Hi
I think the 200 cell BR cats have a baffle in them to reduce the noise (from memory by about 10db!). A much cheaper option than a new back box, might be to talk to Mike and either take the baffles out of your existing cats or get a new set of cats with no baffle in. Alternatively, take the cats out altogether and then put the 200 cell ones back in for a day a year if you don't know a friendly MOT man!

Thanks for the advice, I also like the three way option, mainly quite or loud mode. I am happy with the loudness, it's the kind of resonating noise I can't quite settle with in sport mode, Mike has also adjusted the timing to give a bit of back fire on the overrun which was fun at first, but now getting a bit annoying, easily adjusted I know.Is your car too loud for you? Is the 4.3 back box the same as the 4.7?

Nope, the 4.3 backbox is different to the 4.7. But, IIRC, lots of 4.7 BR customers swap their backboxes for a 4.3 version! (I think that Mikey T is one).Is the 4.3 back box the same as the 4.7?
divetheworld's option might be your solution. But looking at DAE's site, the part in question is £1400 + VAT fitted, so £1680.

Thanks for the info, looks a possible option, I don't need Less noise in sport mode, but I'm looking for more of a v8 growl, and less resonance. B.R. did offer the option of an s- spec bck box, that might be worth looking into. They are really helpful, the 240miles each way trip isn't ideal though.

There are several versions depends on when the OP had them fitted.I think the 200 cell BR cats have a baffle in them to reduce the noise (from memory by about 10db!). He also has a MY12.25 car which has a "loud" exhaust from the factory.
When mine went through BR we tried a few configurations and found the best option was BR headers/cats with 4.3 back box and control switch
I have my switch working via the sport button on the S
It is open on start (loud start up), then is closed through the rev range and always open with the Sport button in.
Gives it a Jekyll & Hyde character with hint of Jekyll at start up

But still civilised and a great sound with it closed.

I had the work done around early November, sounds like either the 4.3 box or the s-spec box will improve things, thanks He also has a MY12.25 car which has a "loud" exhaust from the factory.

Remember the back box has bypass valves. Whether it is a 4.3 back box or a 4.7, when the valves are open, its bypassing the box.As Mr Bravo says, the centre section will quiet it down without losing the power advantages. It wont keep the loudness that I couldn't live with.
In essence, it is the same 'sound' as the 200cell cat and manifold conversion. just less loud. It won't give an American V8 burble.
The rs centre section baffle intermediate pipe is a good product in that it does what it says on the tin which is more or less make loud mode 200 cell cats same if not touch quieter volume as loud mode stock. Exhaust note is very personal, in same week i had experience of one guy where loud was not loud enough, and another with same kit and was too loud. Whether this centre section or simple baffles that are incorporated in cat, both have same effect.
for a balanced review of the product, i was not happy removing tub tunnel centre section crash / energy absorption plate, which is required to be removed to fit the product. RS did come back with a cut and shut plate but seeing as it is unproven in a crash, i couldn't fit it either. In side impact the plate is designed to deform instead of tunnel deforming allowing tub to remain unscathed. If the product has been revised so that the crash plate in its entirety can be fitted, then this will have been a good step forward.

Thanks again, I think it's that sort of V8 burble I am looking for, I'm confident Mike will sort this out , looks like another 240 miles trip lining up..As Mr Bravo says, the centre section will quiet it down without losing the power advantages. It wont keep the loudness that I couldn't live with.

Loudness is OK for my taste, it's the kind of noise that doesn't quite do it, this is not the v8 growl I want, divetheworld, mentioned an American v8 burble, I think that will probably suit nicely, I'll know when I hear it..for a balanced review of the product, i was not happy removing tub tunnel centre section crash / energy absorption plate, which is required to be removed to fit the product. It's all personal taste but I'm with divetheworld on this one, I have the 4.3 engine and backbox and when the valves opened with my 200 cell cats it sounded way too metallic and raspy. It was great at tickover and pulling away etc though. I like the centre silencer solution personally as I would never have activated a switch given my dislike of the noise, a switch is a much cheaper option obviously and is popular with many on here so as I said it's just personal taste really.
