Thinking about a cheap automatic barge to pound the motorway and family holidays etc. I have always had VWs and like the A4 Avant, but the multitronic gearbox is off putting, although the Quattro ones with the tip-tronic are a possibly although seem rare.

330d caught my eye, but most seem high mileage 150k+, which does not bother me too much if I can get a few more years out of it without any big bills. Anybody have experience of these with the automatic?

Budget of around £2-3k.

Saab 9-5? Haven't heard much against E46s though regardless of miles. There's always the left field 3.0 Legacy/Outback route too smile

330d is a good buy, they are very good cars. There is nothing with a high mileage 3 series, they go on forever!!

I would also look at Mercedes C220 cdi or C270 cdi around 2003/2004 for your budget.

Gearboxes on E46's can be weak (torque converter IIRC) , E91's are stronger however the diff went on our E91 at 98k

Sorry for the shameless plug, but I've just listed my car which may be exactly what you're looking for smile

Selling as I put a deposit down on an E92 330d yesterday! Best all-round car on the planet, imo.

Well this has been listed today with similar mileage and spec but for £1000 more. There's also another with similar spec for around the £4.5k mark.
