I've always had low mileage, pretty decent, looked after cars.

However, my current car is tired and is sitting on ebay as we speak. It's developed a few faults i cant be bothered/will cost too much to fix.

Im also looking at the possiblity of a driving ban next year too, so i need a shed to tide me over for 6 months. Suggestions? I don't want anything with a big engine because of mpg/insurance issues. I've just been looking at old 1.8 vectras at the moment. No small hatchbacks either. Family hatch, saloon or estate only.

Is shedding a complete gamble?

Not if you study the modes that interest you, identify the inherent weaknesses and try and avoid any real hopeless cases. The Mondeo Diesels are very long legged pretty indestructible sheds. You could do worse and the MPG should be reasonable. Lots about usually cheap. The Ghia spec models are pretty well specked up. I think you could do worse. Hope your driving ban does not materialise. Happy hunting!

Buy local , buy cheap (sub £800) , long mot and trust your gut feeling aboutu the car and it's seller.

Oh and in your position i'd be looking at citroen c5 , saab 9-5 or rover 75's they all sell pretty cheap.

Are those faults on your current car terminal and is it being sold as spares or repair? If the answer to either of them is no your doing it wrong from the start.

Go for something Japanese and petrol for best reliability vs cost. If you care about nothing else this is the place to put your cash. Little to no depreciation over 6/12 months and no other costs aside from fuel, ins, tax. Choose from:

Honda Accord
Toyota Avensis
Nissan Primera
Lexus IS/GS/LS

What you need is a large G&T, peer pressure and an eBay account. And a Saab. Go forth, sir.

Mk2 (98-05) Toledo 1.9 TDI SE is the perfect shed in my book. Costs pennies, bullet proof, has electic windows, climate and cruise control, decent cabin, massive boot and will do an easy 50 mpg.

1600 sheets for a shed is a bit steep isnt it?

I'm talking £500 here.

Spent £400 on a 1.7 Puma recently. Long tax/MOT + £50 to sort out some electrical gremlins and it's honestly the happiest I've been buying a car (and I once spent well north of £30k on ONE car in my silly younger days).

Bad example. They're well under a grand usually.
