Normally they are insurance write offs, should the numbers get into the wrong hands they have a vehicle to clone.

Not overly bright automatic systems prosecuting the owners of the dead cars for driving them on the road

And on a really silly note my AA cover requires that they cover my plate.

This is the reason.

Copart is unique amongst salvage companies (or remarketeers as they prefer to call themselves) in doing this. Other salvage companies don't bother, I have to say that I'm not too sure that it is needed anyway.

These vehicles then sit in huge compounds whilst the insurer negotiates with the insured. Once completed - and this may takes weeks or months - they are then sold on Copart's online auction for the best price. Usually Copart gets a percentage, but sometimes they buy the wreck from the insurer and sell it themselves.

the abi guidance on total loss require insurers to obscure or remove the number plate of all written off vehicles as soon as possible

And Universal Salvage did this long before the first ANPR camera appeared on our roads, too!

I always assumed that the cars were off tto be repaired and resold and the person doing the reselling wasnt keen on the car possibly being recognised at a later date and itsmshady past being high lighted.
