Our 12 year old lad has his christmas cash burning a hole in his pocket. We are both against him having 18 certificate games for obvious reasons. I play GTA V and wholly understand why it is an 18.
The lad insists he's watched many play throughs on YouTube and although its got fantasy violence in it, I was wondering if anyone could explain what else warrants such a certificate?
Thanks.

Mainly the beheading of orcs and if I remember correctly, severing limbs too.

Tbh, I think the 18 rating is pretty heavy handed, the violence is all prancy, sword flailing stuff and never really feels that brutal, mainly because you only kill orcs and goblins.

I didnt think its any worse than you see in the LoTRs and the hobbit really.

Good game smile

I've never visited the PEGI site to look up content before, so I was curious if they hosted anything. It's very brief compared to the ESRB rating description.

PEGI rate their content very, very differently to the BBFC.

For example, when it comes to foul language if the game had one f-bomb in it, the BBFC would give it a 12. However, because PEGI see a game as non-linear they don't really differentiate between one swear and the game being full of them.

I would not have any problems letting a 12-year old play Shadow of Mordor. It is a little bloodier than the LOTR/Hobbit movies but there is nothing else in there (ie. sex or swearing) of concern. I've just finished playing it and it is a great game.

I miss the days of Soldier of Fortune, many an hour spent in my early teens shooting people in the gut just to see their insides become their outsides....

Good times.

Indeed. Awesome game. Loved blowing holes in people/limbs off/bits of people's heads off.

People remember it just for the gore, but imo it was a really good shooter, the gore was just the icing on the cake.

That was a good time for FPS games. There was much variety.

That was an incredible game. I loved the mission in the office block in Japan - shooting the ninjas with the silenced SMG was a joy (was it called 'The Bulldog'?).

I bought it over the weekend and a couple of hours in I haven't got very far!

it seems to hook a few games into one, elements of Assasins Creed, Skyrim and previous LOTR titles - havn't quite got the hang of the fight mechanism yet, there is a facility to drain enemies to build up your "elf shot" but its a bit frustrating as without the elf shot you can't use your bow...hope that changes as I move through the game.

the captains and intel side of thngs is a neat touch i just need to work out how to get the intel from worms without killing them first. go for it though its not an 18 game imho - its fantasy violence although you might want to view the opening cut scenes as that could be potentially harrowing....

any tips appreciated!

"Elf shot" is your ammo for the bow. To get info from orcs, you need grab them (B / O depending on Xbox or PS), then use the "Interrogate" option (Y / Triangle). Tougher enemies need to be weakened a bit first before they can be grabbed. IIRC, any orc can reveal the identity of a captain or warchief, but only the worms who show up green in wraith view can tell you their weaknesses.

The combat is a bit unbalanced throughout the game, early on a couple of orcs in a group are a serious threat, but by the time you get about halfway through you'll be a practically invincible terminator. Just remember, it's all about timing the button presses, keeping a cool head and staying aware of what ever orc is doing. The attacks and even many of the special skills are a straight lift from the recent Batman games, so if you've played those you should pick it up pretty quick.

Thanks Masto.

I've moved house this week so not had much chance to play anything, no internet either but this is one that doesn;t need it anyway.

i like the captain promotion mechanism which has happened alot as I kept getting killed early on.

I've killed a couple of captains freed a bunch of slaves but keep using up my elf shot too quickly!

I'm getting to grips with the upgrades and awards etc...i'm sure I can google how to kill certain captains like the ambush one for example - just keep getting overrun...

On the strength of this thread, I bought it for the little man. I've watched him play, and it is visually stunning, and full of fantasy violence. Can't really see why its been classified as an 18.
Very thankfull for timers though, as, if he could he would play it all day long. We limit it to a couple of hours at most after school.

I'm liking this actually more and more. it is getting easier, the "spotting" mechanic of the enemies is laughable and no where near as sensitive or difficult as assassins creed, however I like the fact you can just dip in for twenty minutes, do a mission and leave it there.

I'm presuming there is no specific order of doing the main missions???
