Don't risk it.
Cut back on other things but oil is the blood of the engine. Go for peace of mind with the big names and pay the extra. The standard 996 engine is Russian Roulette at best. Don't make it worse by putting crap bullets in the chambers. Err on the side of caution. Oil is the often overlooked unsung hero of performance and reliability.

As an emergency I did use Halfords own brand in my 996.2 for around 4000 miles and didn't have any problems. I toyed with the idea of continuing to use it and changing it every 5-6k, but decided to stick with Millers 10W-50 nano which is changed every year / 12k. Mine's a daily driver with almost 100k on the clock.

I've never used it, but I wouldn't even consider it either, but let us know how you get on...! If your engine goes pop, I bet you'll wish you'd paid for Castrol Edge, Mobil1 etc....

So does that mean if I continue to use Castrol Edge my engine won't go pop as you put it ? See the thing is most won't use it because it say's Halfords on it without any evidence that it's not good oil so in turn makes me think the same and I just follow the herd just like many on here, that's why I am trying to get an answer from someone who knows a bit more about engine oils to explain why it's no good if that's the case.turk1 said:

There is very little difference between the Halfords fully synth and Mobil 1/Castrol edge... If you move towards an Ester based oil the benefits are worth paying for. Millers Nanodrive, Motul V300 etc are the best oils you can use.Get a life - its a fully synthetic 5W/40W oil from one of this country's biggest motoring retailers.
If its new, clean and changed regularly it wont break your engine!
It appears that poor design can do that regardless of what oil you use.

I know that no oil whoever manufacturers it will stop my engine going pop if it's going to do so, i was been sycastic after a previous post, PS who makes get a life oil ? I might try some of that.If its new, clean and changed regularly it wont break your engine!

Mine (986) runs Comma MOtorsport 5W/50 & sounds & runs very well on it, now on about its third sump full. It needn't be A40 either certain A3/B3 oils meet the handbook specs as well.
I'm pretty certain that Halfords oil is Comma oil. Somebody on here posted in a different thread that they worked at Comma and confirmed this.
I used to rally, race, Hillclimb, sprint and commute in a Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo, for 12 years on Halfords Fully syn oil, with only 1 rebuild in all that time, which was down to the nose of crank becoming wobbly. When apart the internals were perfect. I used to do oil changes every 6 months, and buy the oil in bulk when on offer.

Funny you should say that - it was on offer on Boxing day. £12 per 4 litres of fully synthetic. So I bought 10!Should keep the fleet running for the next 12 months, even with 6 monthly changes
