More Nannying and this time -from a Tory Boy!
Discussion
Heard a disturbing item on the Jeremy Vine show.
Some Tory MP (Barnet) is the "Save The Planet" bandwagon.
Apparently - the beleaguered residents are going to receive a black platic box into which they are to place receyclable rubbish such as old newspapers, bottles and cans.
You ask - why ist old Wildy getting her lacy stockings in twist over this?
Becuse this guy says there will be a £1000 fine for anyone who does not have recyclable rubbish in his or her box for collection....
They would be prosecuted for criminal offence unde Environment Act" und get a CRIMINAL record for not having anything to put in this recycling box!//b]
So... what happens to someone who does not purchase newspapers, wine, Perrier/Pelegrino and other glass bottled water, or canned foodstuffs?
I take my old papers and bottles to the recycling point at the local supermarket on the weekly shop. It ist no problem to me.
One person phoned in to the programme - and asked him if the Tories really wanted to return to power as this proposal makes them as daft as the other mob! You could feel the anger blistering in his voice as well.
Und I was drumming on desk "fight - fight - fight.!"
So what do the PH-ers think of this? Would they risk jail, whopping fine and criminal record - or would they nick the neighbour's stuff in his box to avoid a fine?

Sack the Tory before he ballses things up for the election.
We have them to thank for the "Community Charge" and "Business Rates" but of course they were "the government of low taxation", errr because they didn't add the word tax at the end of the term they used and then hoped the British public would be fooled, which they were of course

Dunno about you, but my tax burden was substantially less under the Tories

And they increased VAT twice of course which has remained the same since.
So what extra taxes do you pay now that you didn't before?
The rate of tax has probably increased but so presumably has your salary since 1996.

Goddamn frickin' raving right-wing idiots with their steel-toed jackboots.
Who? The Tories or Labour?
Tories, of course. It was meant to be a joke because that's the kind of response from people on PH that would have greeted the scheme if Labour had launched it.
Oh never mind.

I knew it was a joke as I remembered your politics are somewhat left of centre. I guess you didn't spot my smilie at the top.

My tax burden was massively less under the Tories than it is now. Mind you, I hadn't started earning when the Tories lost power.

I was with you on that one but I think the majority of PH population are right wing. I guess it's the type of community where the majority are very comfortable financially perhaps no mortgage, large savings, expensive sports cars and leisure activities etc and demographically are most likely to support a Conservative leadership where historically interest rates have been high giving a good return on their savings etc.
Personally, I don't like any of them but I think perhaps I do prefer the low unemployment and low interest rates on mortgages and general standard of living with less privatisation.
I do however think Labour are way to soft on the immigrant population and on the social benefits which encourages some to not get off their butt and make their way in life without annoying and impacting on the lives of others around them.
Perhaps this country should give the Lib Dems a crack at leadership, who knows?
I'm not pro Lib Dems either BTW!

In a Welsh setting, but mostly relevant to the UK at large:
www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200304/cmstand/welshg/st040324/pm/40324s01.htm
66 extra taxes or tax increases, as you cannot fail to have been aware of.
What do you mean by 'the rate of tax has increased but so has your salary'?!
simple question to ask yourselves to ascertain what political colour you are:
do you believe either:
a. you are responsible to yourself for your income and welfare not the state and wish low taxation to allow you to spend on what you deem nessesary and wish little state nannying.
b. the state is responsible for your income and welfare and you have few personal responsibilities and accept taxation and nannying for the state to provide for you.
c. mix of a. and b., really don't know but mostly believe b.
then you are
a. Tory
b. old styleeee Labour
c. new smileeeee Labour or Lib Dem
i am strictly a. and proud of it.

NO!
I hear this all the time from people disillusioned with the Tories and Labour, 'let's give them a chance, haven't had them before'. No. This country isn't a pick'n'mix, and they'd ruin it.
Why? Simple. They're based on purely academic and theoretical policies. Labour (despite it's ministerial incarnation) has traditionally been the party of the working class, with labour laws and trade unions behind it. They're still there, despite the Blairite gloss, and though it may not be your cup of tea, there's no denying it's in the 'real world'. The Conservatives, on the other hand, are another pragmatic party, this time of business and economics, and 'top-down' government. It's a good thing to remember that Thatcherism is not Conservatism, it is neo-liberalism, and neither pre- nor post-Thatcher Conservatism has anything to do with her.
The Liberal Democrats are a bunch of university academics who learn about the outside world through textbooks, theories, ideologies and so on. Their methodology is completely detatched because they do not originate from any representative part of the population. They typical Lib Dem approach to a problem is to take a look, categorise it, have a meeting with lots of academics and think-tanks, dig out some textbooks to decide what's the 'ideological' thing to do, then decide that 'resurfacing local roads because they desperately need it' translates as '20 zone, speed humps, scameras, bus lane'. If they were voted in, there would be a recession within a year as they struggled to apply their textbooks and their theories to the economy, and would try to revive it by hiking up taxes again and again.
Don't let them near power, the country wouldn't recover...
