New stepper motor
Discussion
After being persuaded that the system as design can work satisfactorily after all, and I don't need to add a switch to the stepper motor to stop it interfering, I bought a new (OEM) stepper motor from Racetech (very prompt delivery).
Now I notice a couple of things after fitting it.
I can’t hear it resetting itself as I could with the old one. Is there a simple test to check the stepper motor is working?
It has certainly stopped the hanging on of revs as I come to a stop and makes changing gear better as the revs drop when you want them to.
However, if I take my foot of the throttle and push the clutch in (coasting) the revs drop right down to less than 500 rpm and then recover to 950 rpm ish. It hasn’t actually cut out on me but it is a bit disconcerting.
I have tweaked the base idle up a bit (everything off and just undid the grub screw an extra quarter turn). I suppose I really need to do this correctly (engine running and by pass hose clamped) as soon as I get time.
It also needs to be a bit faster on tick over when cold (I guess do the base idle properly is the answer)
I have bought the Rovergauge cable, but haven’t had chance to play yet.
What should I look for on the Rovergauge display ?

Mine does this, as does my friend's 500. I fitted a new stepper a few months ago (genuine one from Racetech) and put it down to 'TADT', especially when still warming up.However, if I take my foot of the throttle and push the clutch in (coasting) the revs drop right down to less than 500 rpm and then recover to 950 rpm ish. Dont forget you have full stepper control with RoverGauge- you can simply unscrew it, turn on the ignition and then use RoverGauge to send steps to the motor and watch it move- 30 steps is a good number. Be warned though that if you extend the cone beond the end of its travel it will come out of the motor, and its spring loaded so it pings away and you may loose the bits, so put it in a box if in doubt. The total travel is something like 120 steps.
