Lung cancer is one of those they identified as having a lifestyle factor.

Not sure that there are any new ideas in there, but they've put some numbers on things.

If you live long enough, you will eventually get cancer.

You could say that about pretty much anything though.

Same here, both of us have never smoked.

Dad smoked heavily for at least 40 years but gave up a few years ago, he died recently at 65, it was a health issue, however not smoking related.

Pretty much any disease of old age, yes. Point with cancer is that you roll the dice every time your cells divide, and your cells keep dividing as long as you live. Sooner or later, you're going to get unlucky.

This is akin to a report of the astonishing discovery that it is not only speed that kills on the roads.

Are the media really so ignorant as to have forgotten that cancer is a natural phenomenon, and not purely the result of smoking/alcohol/asbestos/radiation?

Don't worry; there'll be a report tomorrow saying that one beer or glass of wine a day will give you several different cancers.

And the next week someone else will be saying alcohol is good for you in moderation.

If you believed or took heed of all these studies you would just sit in a field and slowly starve to deat.

Just because I could get struck by lightning, that's no reason to stop looking left and right when I cross the road.

Avoiding lifestyle cancer triggers is a good idea. It lessens your risk, but of course doesn't remove it. Also, if you do get a "bad luck" cancer, aren't you chances of beating it better if you start chemo or whatever from a healthy point?

Staying fit and healthy is the best way to avoid getting it and fighting it off afaik. Hardly down to bad luck then. Smoking 20 a day can't be helpful either!

I dunno, you've got to wonder if someone has a vested interest in all these articles.

Take this one from the BBC again from 2006, "Tea, healthier drink than water".

"Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, and colleagues at Kings College London, looked at published studies on the health effects of tea consumption.

They found clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack.

Some studies suggested tea consumption protected against cancer, although this effect was less clear-cut.

Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening."

"The Tea Council provided funding for the work. Dr Ruxton stressed that the work was independent".
