Two or three good players can't make up for the other very poor players that make up a team.
hmm, terry and ferdinand world class centre halves ,ashley cole top left back thats a pretty strong defence so Im not buying into that ,more bad management than bad players I think.Whilst on holiday a good few years ago, my son and I watched a local Spanish U9 side play - they passed and controlled the ball better than I can recall any recent England team doing. Ok, a daft comparison, but the point is those young lads seemed to have a natural ability for intelligent playmaking through the team. As good as Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes where, England teams fall short in this respect from a very young age and seems to be one of the reasons why we are unable to compete at international level

Scholes was shifted on to the left and that put an end to his England career.
Possibly the most idiotic managerial decision ever ? The was a concerted press campaign to replace scholes with lampard, the reason ...scholes wasn't scoring goals whereas lampard was.Never mind for the first time in ages England had a player who could control and dictate the tempo of a match.
Imagine Spain or Barcelona dropping Xavi or moving him out to the wing ,because he wasn't scoring enough goals?
That was the power of the press.

Also, when you have 3 players who are all naturally trying to take up the same space on the pitch it will never work.
Spot on IMO - they all played in the same position so Scholes ended up left midfield and the team never had shape or balance. franki68 said:

As others have said the idea of shifting him left to accommodate other players was just ludicrous.
For me it was a combination of the press and managerial incompetence.
If one of the "names" wasn't picked there would be stories all over the place.
And somehow the manager couldn't work out how to play and dominate teams with players like
Seaman, Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Terry, Cole, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Rooney, Owen, Shearer (the list goes on)
It's criminal!

It was only till the emergence of Michael Carrick did a DMF not only protect the back four but splay passes that could be the genesis of an attack was there some sort of appreciation but even now Carrick is still regarded as underrated.
With Xavi and Pirlo getting recognition Gerrard evolved into the 'quarterback' role which probably tells you about Lampard and Gerrard: box to box MFs who like to raid the final third.

Passing technicians were very much underrated at that time.
Hoddle being the ultimate example of a squandered talent I would say. Only made 53 appearances for England. Supremely talented on the ball. And I am a Gooner!! 80's football can look agricultural compared to today but class is permanent as they say https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xz3uRITYI8
