This morning the fans in the Boxster (981) didn't work - after driving for about 10 minutes they suddenly sprung into action!?!? This is the second time it's happened... Anybody else experienced the same problem or have any idea what's causing it...?

Are they supposed to be always on? :-/

They are controlled by thermostat and should not be on all the time. On my 987 Spyder the fans only cut in after a long period in stop start traffic. On a long run they don't cut in at all - in fact I am rarely aware of them operating.(I am assuming youmean external cooling fans)

Do you mean the internal / climate fans?

Sorry, meant the internal fans and windscreen demister. Usually when I put the front windscreen demister on it comes on max power - this morning (and the other time it happened), nothing. Turning up the cabin fans did nothing either. Then after about 10 mins they all started working fine. Done a bit of research and looks like it could be down to low battery (it's not been used much over Xmas)..!?!?

I had the same problem, which lasted for about 10 days. I booked the car into my local OPC for them to investigate, then when en route and within sight of the dealership, the fan started working. The techies investigated anyway, but surprise, surprise, could find nothing. It remains a mystery, but at least I got the car cleaned.

Had the same thing a year ago, fan replaced... Happened again last month! Fan replaced, off in again for the 'Engine Control Light' now illuminated.... Deep Joy....

I cannot remember for sure, but wasn't 3rd Jan one of the very cold nights where it did not get above freezing the next day?
If so, it may be that the controller decided that it was pointless blowing very cold air at a misted up window, so waited until there was warmth in the engine. This is how my Subaru works, so I assumed normal with my Cayman.

Mine gave up latter part of last year. I had noticed one of the fuses had blown. Turned out to be a hole in one of the a/c condensers which let all the gas escape.

They replaced loads of parts, filled it up with gas, it now works fine!

9x1 has shown a common fan fault the last few years at the same time each year (during cold, damp ambient conditions) the fan rotor sticks to the bushes (a comparison could be brake pads sticking to discs?) depending on the switch off temp/humidity. If the fan sticks again take it to your OPC; there are bulletins and a process involved to resolve the issue.

I think there's a redesigned replacement fan part too, if it's completely gone.

Thanks for the thoughts / feedback - it's only happened on two isolated occasions (when it's been cold and wet and / or unused for a while) ... will mention it when the car goes in for its recall regarding the instrument display.

Same on my 981.

I called Porsche Assistance and they sent the AA to try and fix it before they recovered it.

Turned out to be a flat spot on the motor, so just a quick turn of the motor by hand and it works again. But it will obviously stop working again if it stops at that exact point again.

Hoping Porsche fix it on Wednesday, I have written proof from the AA with the problem details because its currently working.
