Private plate advice please
Discussion
Hi, I have just purchased a second car and I currently have the V5C/2 for it, I also have another car with a private plate but I will be taking that car off the road and using the car I have just purchased ,both the tax and the MOT on the car I will be taking off the road run out late February ,could someone please help as to the best way to get the plate of the car I am taking off the road on to the car I have just purchased. Thanks
I think you need the 'New' car V5 in your name before doing a transfer.
Put your plate on retention NOW it's a fee of £80 + £25 for retention then when you get V5 back for 'New' car, send New V5 & retention document back to Swansea & they will authorise the transfer.
I've said to do retention now because IIRC you cannot transfer a plate from a vehicle that has no VED or MOT & as you will use the Green slip to get VED for your 'New' car that will automatically generate a V5 in your name. Also make sure you use exactly the same name for retention as you do for VED otherwise they may refuse to do transfer. Ie If your name is on V5 as Fred make sure it's not Frederick on retention form. DVLA struggle with shortened names!!
Hope this helps.

From memory as it has been a while but you will pay £80 to retain and then ANOTHER £80 to transfer from the retainYou should check I'm right but I would just do the one transfer @ £80
Not sure thats the best way personally as this will take a while and cost £25 extra.
The donor car has a valid mot and tax until february so you can transfer the plate straightaway to your new car using a V317 here
https://www.gov.uk/transferring-vehicle-registrati...
The old car will likely been reverted to its original plate and the tax and mot will move across and a new V5 will be sent in your name.
Your new car must already be taxed (if not tax it now on the current plate). when you send it off they will move tax and mot to private plate and generate the new V5.
I dont think you need to put the plate on retention at all, but if you are unsure call the DVLA monday morning for confirmation.

Hi just checked MOT runs out on the 23rd Feb 2015 and Tax needs renewing March 1st I assume that this is long enough for the new V5 arrive and for me to send the new transfer over
If you do one transfer it will all be back in about 10 days, did mine the week before Christmas.S5V8 said:

Tax the new vehicle with the doc number from the V5C/2.
Send MOT, V5C/2 + completed V62, plus V317 completed in sections 2+3, the complete V5C & MOT from your old car to DVLA with a cheque for £80.
Staple everything together so that it stays in one pile, and it will be transferred across along with the new owner added.
There's certainly no need to put it on retention.
Any queries PM me - as you can imagine we do a fair few of these each day

Thanks ,Ok up to now I have taxed the new vehicle online , I have the New keeper slip (green) the dealer sends off the the change of owner so i am not sure if i need the V62 and i have the MOT ,do i need the V5 to be sent to me before i can go ahead ,sorry about all this but all the forms etc just drive me crackers

Just a quick one ,would it worth calling the dvla and explaining to them what I intend to do,as the dealer could send the new keeper docs off at the same time I send mine
No - won't make a blind bit of difference to them.Post Offices don't normally have the V317s any more so just download it and print it, along with a V62. Link was above.
Thanks ,both forms now downloaded, if i have opted to pay the new cars tax via monthly direct debit does this mean the tax runs out on the 31st Jan the feb etc as on the form it ask when the tax runs out ,would i correct in putting Jan31st.....also on the V317 on section 3 would i fill out registered keepers details or leave that blank as i am sending a v62
