Looking to buy a car for the other half hopefully this week. There's one that looks good, very clean and decent pictures. Description is fine also. My only concern is MOT expires 02/03/2013. It's a private sale but would like more MOT than that for obvious reasons.

Question: how long before MOT expiration can it be renewed?

I want to ask the seller to put a new MOT on it before purchase, but I don't know if it is too soon for them to be able to do that.

Thanks in advance.

Anytime you like. You could get it MOT'd every day of the year if you wanted to.

You can MOT a car at any time. I always ask the seller to get a 12 month MOT as part of the sale.

Assuming OP means 2015? I thought it was 4 weeks before the current mot expires?

The trick is to agree a price based on it passing a full MOT which you pay for at a MOT station of your choice, and to be there when the inspector puts it on the ramp, and have a good look under it yourself.

No private seller that I've dealt with has minded this deal. Had a couple fail of minor issues, and one, I agreed to take it anyway, and another the seller had the fault fixed at his cost, and kept to the price agreed.

I've done this even when there was 11 months MOT on the Car.

Yes, if you wish to maintain the expiry date. Eg you'd then have 13 months until it expired next.

Nothing to stop you MOT-ing a car anytime you want though. It'll just expire 12 from date of issue as you'd expect if it's done outside the 30 day period.

you can get an mot anytime you like. if it's within a month of the expiration of the current mot, it'll run for 12 months after the expiration of the current mot.

This everytime even if its got loads of MOT - just piece of mind really and that I don't have to hassle for 12 months. Also a seller the ones I've bought from or seen have always said its in top top condition like new etc so would fly three - ok MOT it and this price I'll buy.
