Hi all, i've just quit my job to start a new venture and i could do with some of your views on web sites. My company involves me setting up a web site to perform a very simular function to autotrader and rightmove. Could you all take a few min to help me.
You all use the internet (or you wouldnt be reading this) and have sites you do and dont like. Could you please list your top 5 or more web sites, not porn sites or silly things. Sites you use or have used and think wow thats good or easy to use or you just like them.

Could you also list a few sites you hate and sites that you use that frustrate you. If you have a site you use that you think is good, but wish it did this or had that could you please tell me about that as
well.

I need to know what people like and dont. As you all come from different backgrounds, education, different ages and interests your opinons will be very helpful.

I'll tell you all what the business is when its more developed.

Thank you very very much for your help.

Paul

I'd edit your post if I were you...I think you're giving too much away. Someone might beat you to it.

I like

www.stefancarlton.net (it's mine )
www.google.com/ie
www.imdb.com
http://catless.ncl.ac.uk
www.play.com
...

see where I'm going with them? Really simple, non cluttered, plain looking sites where you can find the information you want very easily indeed.

Sites I hate with a passion:

www.yahoo.co.uk
www.msn.com
... or any of the "portals" which try to push to much information across and then put adverts on top of all of that...

Most importantly make damned sure it works in Firefox/IE/Netscape... as generally speaking the hated sites don't support anything other than Internet Explorer.

Make sure you check out www.webpagesthatsuck.com/

I always think Amazon is a devilishly clever site.

I hate sites that involve waiting for images to load and that don't feature a phone number anywhere for when it all gets a bit much for me.

Ones i HATE are those with pointless flash graphics.

I'm similar to docevi1... like easy, clean and uncluttered websites, that show you the details you need and no crap.

For cars

www.dhales.co.uk. Simple site , good info, easy to navigate.

www.raw2k.co.uk Love the way you can adjust the listing order in the database. Dead easy to search.

Two things i hate to start with, as that will turn me away quicker than its content

1. Pop up Ads - nothing worse than lots of them, or like AutoExpress when they appear on top of the article your trying to read. Firefox browser gets rid of many

2. Complicated Flash sites - Basic flash in this day isnt a problem, but I hate those sites which take an age to load only for some (normally crap) animation or more flash. A good case in point is the MB cars site from before Christmas.

Get those two right and you've got my attention

Favourite/Useful sites.

www.pistonheads.com of course
www.seatcupra.net - I helped design and run it
www.amazon.co.uk - pretty slick and quick and does everything you need
www.autotrader.co.uk - although it does pee quite a few people off that you have to register etc
www.andyblackmore.co.uk - needs a big re-design but as I'm leaving this side of work for a couple of years, it will site there for a while before I update it

One thing to remember is web software.

Firefox is new and proving really popular. Some sites dont work 100% on it, so thats something to consider.

IE is still the most popular, but here are the browsers stats for the last month on SeatCupra.net. Wonder if they are similar to PH, Ted?

(dont forget Firefox has only been full beta for about 2 months)

MS Internet Explorer 76.1 %
Unknown 14 %
Firefox 6.8 %
Safari 0.9 %
Opera 0.6 %
Mozilla 0.5 %
Netscape 0.4 %
ANT Fresco 0.2 %
