I bought a cheap radio controlled g-gauge engine as centerpiece for the Christmas dinner table. Although it is OK the remote is a simple stop start which gives a rather fierce action to the train. I am building a soft start circuit for the (9V) motor but a better solution would be a proper analogue throttle.

So I would welcome any ideas of a simple way of doing this, I was wondering whether I could adapt an old micro helicopter controller.

Here is the answer to your problem - http://deltang.co.uk - there are train specific recievers in the range.

Check out the video's.

I'am in the middle of using one of their receivers on a car project I couldn't believe how small it is.
