My God I felt that!!
Discussion
Went out for a pre-arranged ride this morning with a friend of mine on a circuit I know well of just short 17 miles,
we are roughly same age and ability but I have a cough that has been nagging at me for around two weeks now and although better then it was ....its still there and slowly dragging me down!
The circuit is made up of good hills, flats and descents (short).
Temp today was max 3 degrees so you could say a tad chilly!
Anyway I done a couple of short circuits of my village before starting off, now normally this is a formality, but this time I felt "the burn"...WTF!!
I just new this little jaunt was going to be a killer but arrangements had been made and I knew that I was going to have to just "Rule 5" up in big doses!!
...Oh my lord soon as we were on the flat I could feel my Lungs falling apart, I was coughing up "Stuff" that hurt, I was on fire, my heart was beating like a drum but funny enough legs were spinning ...I was "manning up" not to badly at this point but the first hill all that went to pieces...I fought my way up the b
d...totally nothing left, every part of me complaining (this is 5 miles in!) I was suffering like I'd just started riding again after a 20 year absence and I had put on 10 stone !!
Somewhere inside me I was determined to catch my mate up 100 mtrs up the road...this was done surprisingly quickly, he had not even realised he had dropped me at this point so I just mentioned that "I felt that" and explained I felt not 100% and am off the pace a little, he helpfully explained I need to take a good look at myself an man up ffs!....cycling mates are great are they not!!
anyway this ride carried on like this (coughing up bits of lung, incredible pain from every part of my body etc)
I got to the last drag up about 1 1/2 miles from home and just kept a steady cadence and at this point started to feel better but "luckily" this little jolly was nearly over (thank God!!)
I sitting here now feeling totally knackered, but strangely satisfied that I done that ride, it would have been easy to say I was not up to it to my mate, but I tend to act first and think about my more stupid decisions that I make in this cycling lark later!
The strange thing about this ride is I've done the route loads of times and even though realising I was not 100% never thought I would suffer so bad!
Anyone else going through "man illness" like this and still riding, or are most of you taking the sensible actions and leaving the bike in the shed like responsible person should do!

I arranged to do 2 things today - take down the Christmas lights and do a quick 10 mile loop on my MTB (because it's harder to ride and I had a route planned).
Having struggled for 2 hours to get the lights down, dried, packed and stashed in the garage, I was freezing and could just look at my bike in the garage with a mixture of pity and hatred. Needless to sat, I whimped out.
I've just had a shower and feel warm for the first time since I crawled out of bed.
Hate winter.

I'll carry on riding with a mild cold but anything more full-on, i.e. chesty cough, I will take a few days off to recover properly. Forcing yourself to ride when unwell will only prolong your cold and the time to recovery. Fortunately since ramping up my training last year I didn't have to take a single day off, but in the past I've had some ride stinkers!
I rode last year in the midst of a chest infection and i'll never do that again. It was no fun, I moaned the whole way round and sulked off 10 miles early. Saying that, I had my first ride back in a couple of months and happened to do it on a freezing cold day and I felt awful, when I got back after a mere 10-ish miles, my lungs felt like they had been scrubbed with a wire brush, my chest was tight and my heart was pounding. I put it down to a mix of lungs that hadn't had a work out for a while, unforgiving cold air and the fact that I hadn't ridden for a while. A big dose of rule 5 is the only cure, except in the case of illness.
