Firstly, hello everyone. I'm a very long time lurker on here but have just signed up on here to get some collective advice.

I have the need for speed itch having had an RS4 in recent years. Due to current circumstances, I cannot splash out on another RS4 right now but want to get a brutally fast car within the next two years. I think I will have up to £40K to spend at the end of two years from now and lesser amounts in between.

So, the question is this: what would satisfy my itch for a car that almost takes your breath away - something that is very quick and powerful but doesn't cost too much? My previous RS4 was modified and remapped so was fairly quick.

My shortlist is as follows at the moment:

1. Used Nissan R35 GT-R (I will only be able to afford this in 2 years time based on current savings per month as the cheapest ones seem to be around the £40K mark at the moment)

2. Used Audi RS6

3. Used BMW M6

4. Another used RS4

5. Used BMW M5

6. Used BMW M3

7. Jaguar XKR

8. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Any others that I should consider? It would be a weekend car. I've also thought about a Subaru STi and Evos as those can be had a lot cheaper than the cars listed above. I don't want something too stripped out and too basic. It would need to be enjoyable during the Winter months too. Outright power and torque would take precedence over handling.

Thanks for those suggestions. Kind of related to those was a Merc CLS 63 AMG. A ferocious barge and, I think, a lot cheaper than £40K if I could actually find one!

Wouldn't you be better off renting/buying a track toy?

TVR Cerbera, £20,000 will get you a half decent one plus you'll have plenty of dosh left to make it 'special' and hit 200mph.

A Cerbera, Tuscan or T350 will both be fast and feel fast.

This.

Out of your list, the XKR or C63 would be my choices.

If I wanted my breath taken away, a 348 or 360 (no 355s in budget in the PH classifieds), an R8 or a Caterham R500.

Depends if it's for road or track or both.

For the road I would go C63 but I wouldn't for track as it will totally destroy its consumables. C63 very easy to simply remap to 520ish bhp too and has the best sounding engine.

My other comments:

1. Used Nissan R35 GT-R

- Very high running costs, insanely fast though and I would love one, double the running costs to my C63??

2. Used Audi RS6

- Greatly tuneable to 700bhp and a straight-line rocket

3. Used BMW M6

- Great car, but a GT and a muted engine (assuming F13 model)

4. Another used RS4

- Great useable performance but too civilised for me

5. Used BMW M5

- See M6 comments, but with useable space

6. Used BMW M3

- Great track day car and more focused on than a C63, but needs to be revved in comparison

7. Jaguar XKR

- Heavy barge and aging fast IMO

700bhp remapped E55 AMG, and £18,500 left over to buy something with when it blows up?

As the other suggestions (TVR, Viper, Corvette, Monaro) have been said already, how about a Roush or GT500 Mustang with anything upto £15k change depending on the age.
