Still loving it

Living in London, my poor Cayman can be unused for a couple of weeks at a time. Today, I sorted out the blown brake bulb, washed the car, and drove over to Mum's to help her ditch her Christmas tree. Didn't get over 30mph, but just enjoyed a simple drive in a clean car that I've had 7 years now since new (a personal record).
I understand what you mean. I've had my 987 nearly 6 years and every time I've thought about selling it and getting something else I come back to another Boxster or Cayman. Yes, you can buy more exotic, faster, more comfortable and newer but for getting up early on a sunny Sunday morning for a couple of hours A and B road fun there is really nothing to touch it for putting a smile on my face.
I hope you continue to enjoy yours.

Same here. 4 years into my ownership of a 987S that has only just turned 20k miles even though it will be 10 years old later this year.
I live in the London suburbs which means I have zero need to own a car whatsoever, but it is easy to get out to some fairly good roads early on on a Sunday morning. Driving for the sake of it represents almost all of the tiny amount of usage that the car gets!
It is the perfect car for me - really well balanced and always feels very special for the cost of the car.
It is also quite good at the boring financial stuff - £285 tax, £185 insurance, 2 year service intervals and it's age means depreciation is quite low as well. I know that is not the reason most people buy a Porsche, but it is quite important when you a trying to justify keeping a car that you really don't need!

I know exactly how you feel. We had an '06 Boxster S 3.4 which we had from new, specced it spot on, even did factory collection with it. Drove all over Europe and did some amazing trips and holidays. Then 4 years later we sold it for what should have been a better car, a Cayman S PDK. stupid stupid move. My wife was actually in tears when we drove in that Boxster for the last time. The Cayman was a compromised spec to keep the cost down and we got it badly wrong (long story). Anyway, Cayman S and used 997/2 PDK later (neither of which we had the same bond with) we have ordered a new Boxster GTS, again specified exactly as we want, no compromises in the hope it will be the true replacement for our much missed Boxster. Only difference this time, on cost grounds we are not doing the factory collection.dreamcar said:

The memories are a big part of it. I bought the car shortly after I moved to Delaware USA, to replace a 996 that was getting a little stroppy in its middle age. I bonded with the Cayman far more quickly than the 996, used it for trackdays and autosolos, and drove it to Canada, and cross-country to Los Angeles. Then I moved to the UK, brought the car with me to London where it no longer had to earn its keep as a commuter, and now we use it mainly for roadtrips including Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. Later this year, we'll head for the Finnish arctic, and we might get a photo outside the 987 factory in Uppsala. So, even when I hop in the car to go to the supermarket, I'm reminded of the great trips so far, and of those yet to come.

Could you please elaborate on how you specced it badly? Interesting to hearGassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
