Hi all,

Just wondering what the collective thinks about a current dilema that I have with my career. Nothing serious, but the team that I currently work in is being split - I need to make a choice between one side and the other.

Its IT but at the moment do a bit of high / medium level consultancy as well as some design and implementation work. Basically the team is being split into two - one for consultancy and the other for "solutions" (or better described as implementation).

My background is implementation and technical aspects, and I feel more comfortable here. But the consultancy side is something that I have been doing for the last 4 odd years so fine there too. So, a break down of advantages / disadvantages:

Consultancy

Pros:

Ultimately more money after a few more years worth of experience
Currently a large existing team
Easy

Cons:

Deadmans shoes for promotion
Dull as ditch-water

Solutions

Pros:

Big growth planned - note planned
More technical
Better promotion prospects

Cons:

Bigger risk - though unlikely to be "laid-off"
New team and not many existing personal relationships

Dont know what do to. What do you think?

I'd go for solutions. I know little about the area or industry or market or...well anything come to think of it - but greater risk tends to bring greater reward.

Also you don't want to move into a promotionless stagnant pool that the other role seems to be.

My 2p anyway

Spent 40 years in computing and telecomms and managed international networks with over 100,000 users. Have met very few consultants (ie talkers) who impressed me but lots of implementers (ie doers) who have. Go for solutions I say.
