Until this morning I had always dismissed those stories from people who had a "locked/alarmed" car broken into. It's happened to me... My 2004 S-Type was broken into overnight. I don't keep anything in there, so just my glove box and boot riffled through plus ashtray opened.

What really puzzles me is that the car was locked prior to me opening up and discovering this. How did this happen? My car was definitely locked this morning when I discovered this. I'm not looking for an idiots guide to breaking into a car, but any pointers on what I could have done or can do going forward would be very helpful. A neighbor mentioned a similar incident a few months ago and I was very dismissive on the feasibility of the car having been locked in the first place.

Not sure how this happened but report it on 101.

Is it possible you did not lock it ?
they looked through it and locked it when finished? pushing button and holding door handle up as they closed it.

I don't recall ever having done this in the past, but this is always a possibility. There wasn't any distraction that would have caused me to forget to do so and I don't understand why a burglar would lock the car. I'm likely over analyzing things...

The Police are coming around to finger print later, will be interesting to hear what they have to say.

Be sure to Double lock it in future
in case they opened it from outside using piece of wire etc to flick the door handle unlocking the car.

A faulty ECU that sometimes unlocks the car of it's own accord? A colleague with an A6 had this problem. He'd lock it, hear the locks click etc etc and come back a few hours later to find the doors had unlocked. The windows would also wind down of their own accord if the car was left out in heavy rain. It could just be similar has happened with your car and the theif took advantage. I very much doubt they'd go to the trouble of using a slim Jim or a packing cable to manually unlock the car.

Were all doors definitely locked? If the motor's gone on your passenger door it won't lock but you'll still think the cars locking fine as the drivers side will be locked.

There are now the key fob type things that can block your car being locked (the user will have to be near/watching you). They could have blocked the signal locking the car, gone through it, then the car may have just self locked after X amount of time?
