Anyone had any luck fitting an aftermarket headunit to a Porsche with the Bose stereo wired up via fibre optics?

I want to fit an Alpine unit with Ipod control but local ICE centre wasn't looking to hopeful of finding an easy fix to intergrate the bose stuff with an aftermarket unit.

I would wait for the dension link that hooks nto the std CDR23 that is "rumored" to be coming but I'm too impatient!

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!

I don't wish to hijack but...

how difficult is it to change the audio unit in a Porsche? I wanted a unit to play MP3's and i would also like to upgrade the front speakers while I'm at it.

My local ICE specialist (Sound Gallery High Wycombe) told me that cars with the MOST system / fibre links are virtually a non starter to upgrade. There is not much point keeping the speakers as they are pretty weak, along with the CD H/U and amp

I had the whole Porsche system (Hi-Fi pack) replaced with Alpine, Genesis / JL-Audio and iRiver bits and it sounds a lot better. Not cheap unfortunately.

Koenig is 100% correct - MY2003 onwards cars have the MOST fibre optic bus, which is crap and totally incompatible with everything on the market. To replace you'll have to rip the whole lot out and re-wire. The only thing salvageable are the speakers (which are wired normally), which unless you've got bose are soooooo rubbish its not worth saving them.

If you have pre-2003 though, there are a lot of options.

Anyone, looked into uprating the PCM1 system with something a bit more modern? Perhaps something you can actually get upto date maps for? The latest Alpine or Pioneer DVD based SatNav's would be nice. I did try a couple of places locally but none of them seemed keen to even look into the problem.

Give the guys at Prestige a ring. If they can't fix your problem, no-one can.
