Porsche inspections
Discussion
Hi all
Sorry if this has been posted to death already, but I'm new to the site.
I'm looking to get my first Porsche (911 C4S), and have found one that looks good online - 2004, 34k on clock, serviced 6 times in last 10 years. I've been to look at it and it has had the RMS and IMS changed when the clutch was done, as well as having the air con condensers changed as well.
All that seems v good, but I'm keen to get it inspected as well.
The garage are fine with an inspection, but when I mentioned Peter Morgan's name (first to come up under google search) the garage owner said it's not worth paying that much money for one, and that whilst Peter himself is very good, the rest of his staff might not be quite so top notch.
They recommended Alternative Vehicle Inspections (Steve Lee), who seems to be similar, but half the cost.
Does anyone have experience with AVI? Are they any good? Or is the garage trying to foster someone they know on me, who will give a "good" inspection no matter the actual condition of the car?
All help on this topic much appreciated, the garage in question is in Kent.
Cheers

The IMS has been changed (circa £600? extra when doing a clutch) or the IMS end cover (about a £30 part and negligible labour when doing the clutch)?
I've never been involved in an inspection Peter himself has done, but have with one on a 968 that someone did for him, my experience would echo what you've been told.
For an alternative try Ian Gorham at County Classics in Tonbridge.

'The rest of my staff' is Bob Spratley, who has very significant experience with Porsches and has been doing inspections with me for some 5 years. He is a very safe pair of hands and carries all the necessary equipment to do a comprehensive inspection in the field. His specific Porsche experience is such that he does all our faster 911 inspections. We only inspect Porsches.
I get fed up with a small number of known names, usually on this forum and usually competition, continuously trying to smear our business. We are celebrating our 15th year shortly and I will always attempt to answer any specific criticism, but hearsay and general disrespect aren't worthy of further comment.
Steve Lee did inspections for us for some years and is also a safe pair of hands.
There are independent dealers we don't go to, because their standards wouldn't meet any kind of quality audit, while with most we have very good working relationships that always help the customer to a better deal. There are others who will always try to deter the client from having a comprehensive inspection. You should draw your own conclusions from that.
With a 2004 car I would be concerned about cylinder bore scoring not IMS or RMS issues. I would also expect to put a laptop on this car to check the mileage reading, over-revs and fault codes. The main issues with facelift 996s are being poorly serviced, so suspension, aircon, electrical accessories and so on. Service history is a critical item on these engines, as is the kind of use the car has had (determined in part from the ECU data).

I have had a Peter Morgan inspection on a 964 C2 years ago and I found the report to be the most comprehensive report that I have ever seen for an independent inspection.
His knowledge in the industry is exceptional (from classic to nearly new models).
Just my 2p but I suspect that most people who have used Peter Morgan are more than happy with the results.

Would be worth clarifying the IMS replacement. Do they mean the IMS bearing was replaced or just the seal? RMS is just a seal and both my 04 996s needed that replacing.
When we did the clutch on one of ours we also replaced the flywheel (DMF). There was slight judder that made me think the DMF was knackered. We also fitted an upgraded third party IMS bearing.
Condensers and rads are standard stuff to replace on the water cooled cars. Quite common for the silencers to be rotting along the seams too. Coating on the headlamps has generally started to break down. Coil packs are another consumable.
We had one of ours checked for bore scoring and it was ok. This was done by a local Indy.
