Have you actually listened to the commentary?

yea and driven the I8 which ran out of battery after 20 miles then resorted to a 225 BHP wimp engine, slow as fk.

Indeed. It's a technical showcase for the future, and a mighty impressive one at that, but it is seriously over-rated.

I walked past a black one at Leeds BMW in their showroom and never gave it a second glance. The sales guy said "beauty isn't she?" I was like "Yep, it's nice. I prefer that 520D behind you though". biggrin

^ your opinion. I think they're stunning, particularly in white.

If there wasn't a 12+ month waiting list I'd have one already.

Do yourself a favour and drive one "For the Day" first, then tell us what you think.

It may well just be me (quote at will...), but I thought the 'generated' noise in both cars' cabins sounded quite similar.

  • Disclaimer - I'm not entirely opposed to such things. In my view, both the M135i and indeed my F10 M5 sound pretty good inside and out.

Surely it was an unfair comparison given that the i8 was out of battery juice?

In normal driving the battery will be recharged from braking and/or the ICE. The i8 is definitely not a track car, but I think it does have it's place.

Precisely, the idea is that you switch to the high performance mode when you need it. You don't keep it in that mode all the time.

I thought they both sounded quite similar too, Steve certainly doesn't like the M4 very much from his commentary which does seem pretty sad really because once upon a time pretty much everyone lusted after the M3 and it just proves that times are changing and not always for the better.

I went to have a look at the i8 and thought it looked superb.

I believe also that the battery charges directly from the engine as well as from braking regeneration, depending upon the driving mode.

Personally I would have much preferred to see the i8 charged properly to get a closer indication of comparative performance on the video.

When I had one for the day, I was told when the battery ran out to keep it in sport mode to recharge the battery quicker, it may have been working but performance was well down!!.
OK we would not drive in sport+ all day so it could in effect recharge to a certain level.
NO boot space all only back seat area killed it for anything other than short weekend aways.
It did have a "bucket sized" hole under the rear hatch cover also.

I've stayed out of this discussion so far. However, comparing the M4 against the I8 is wrong, and autocar make this point. The I8 was built as a stunning on-road concept hybrid car which was designed to pump out 40-50+mpg. Yes, it has some fantastic numbers attached to it (with electric + engine), but it was not designed to be driven around like a loon, nor was it designed to compete directly with the M division (or at least in my opinion), it is a mid-range car (260-280bhp?) with a huge price tag. However, it really shows what BMW can do, and will do longer term - i think we should stand back and at least admire what they are seeking to achieve with it.

The M4 is the mid-range M sitting between the 3 and the 5. My feelings are that it was designed to replicate the 3 more than the 5, but with additional comforts. The 3, 4, and 5 are awesome cars - I have a 5, purchased as i needed the space and practicality of its size, rather than the performance of the 3. The 4 was not around when i bought mine - would i have considered it? yes.

I have not driven the I8 and will freely admit to this. It looks fantastic - but for that price tag.. no. I do not have that kind of money kicking around.

Electric/hybrid cars are going to become more and more fashionable to buy, it's just the way things are going, and with the car being purchased in number it will only advance the technology quicker. Us petrol heads who enjoy a good exhaust note, the smell of 20w50 mineral oil, and a good ole tinker with a power commander are a dying breed.

I suspect in a few years we will move to smaller engines with turbos, with additional electric all wheel drive technology rather than v10's and v8's with turbos on.

You should have gone to a cattery if you wanted kittens. I wonder how many kittens the sales person had.. and how much they were..

It's not as expensive as you may think, if you run your own company. There was a long thread on this a while back on PH. It worked out similar to a Mondeo company car or something ridiculous.

JMBMWM5 you are making the oft repeated comparison of the i8 to a regular petrol car. Of course you would be disappointed if you were hoping for a direct replacement.

Problem with the i8 is that a Tesla Model S makes it look like yesterdays technology.

Tesla will very soon have solved the charging issue by having battery packs that you can swap for pre-charged ones at charging stations in 3 minutes.

The latest Model S has 700bhp, 860lb/ft and does 0-60mph in 3.2 secs. And seats 7 people.
