With the exception of Nissan, all Japanese factorys doing Sports car suicides.
lets see..

Honda: No real sportscar at the moment, the S2000 was already doomed after few years of production.
The New CTR wont be a rival to Focus RS. Its a Chav GTI.

Subaru STI was a great car.. 10 years ago.. but the technology never improved.
Power is still at the same level with the 10 year+ old 6 gear box. BRZ without STI engine is a fail !

Mitsusti ..evo 9 was their last true sportscar.. evo 10 is even a disgrace to chinese cars.

Toyota gamer over.. Prius and Hybrid stuff to death.
But a new unaffordable concept will shine at Geneva to demonstrate the "true wannabe genes" of a boring company.

Mazda besides MX-5 nothing new here.. A born failure a.k.a. Rotary engine could debut soon.

Erm isn't the gt86 the car all petrolheads wanted? Manual low weight Rwd cheap, n/a

Built it it will sell millions, so they do, oh hang on it needs a turbo really. Oh so it needs what every other manufater gets slagged off for adding to their engines. Right.

No wonder the market fails.

Lightweight RWD sports car, I don't see the recipe for disaster so he must be on to something that we arent.

Markets change, sadly the case for the sportscar is a very difficult one to justify these days. Roads and driving are so congested there isn't much room for enjoyment anymore, the buying tendencies of our own domestic market show this.

People want the newest, blingest most gadget-laden eco car they can afford to rent (lease). MPGs, CO2s and toys are far more important than a good turn-in, adjustable steering angles and a sweet rev-band.

Maybe one day they will make a comeback, but certainly the "everyday sportscar" has had its day. This isn't the manufacturers losing their way, it's business.

I think he means that a new "born failure" car, i.e. one with a rotary engine might surface.

Dont agree with the gearbox comment. Most petrolheads love a 6 speed manual and that gearbox can take up to 600 bhp as standard! Its one of the best things Subaru has ever made.

I'd go along with that, but also, both seem to be more addictive than crack. And in the case of the latter, more expensive!

Agreed. Another demonstration that internet chatter isn't worth a row of beans. Manufacturers need cars shifting out of the showrooms. People talk "flash" and then buy some tedious golf diesel instead.

yes This.

Unfortunately the misguided desire to own a white tractor with mega empeegees has effectively ruined this market. There will always be demand and there will always be something to scratch the itch but mainstream it ain't these days frown

and unfortunately Swiss are leading the way. Despite having beautiful B roads, mountains, cheaper petrol than neighbours, even cheaper 98RON, dislike for diesel and money, what do you see? Very few sports cars! Very few MX5s, zero Toyburus (except mine, but i get looks of pity not admiration!). What you will discover if you visit and drive out of Zurich is that the white Audi pushing to get past at 126kph will be a V8 not a TDi.
TDis are for vans. They got that right.

There is an active oldtimer scene though and a delight in old British sports cars, all of which are meticulously maintained.

(OP from CH btw)

Also, Toyota do some fast machinery in the form of some of their Lexuses.

The GT86 is legendary, though. It's not all about the numbers, it's about the feel. On paper it'll lose to some boring golf, in reality, it's a much more invigorating drive.

Tell me about it, they only made 'em for ten years.
