Hi folks, what are your thoughts on the EU tyre label, I like the information on wet grip and fuel efficiency, but who really cares about the noise level. Does anyone really look at the noise level when purchasing their tyres!!!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/4.gif

I looked at he noise levels for tyres before I brought Goodyear wranglers for the RR. Why would you not want the quietest tyre?

It's not a big issue on most cars but if you have a 4x4 and want decent all-terrain tyres, the noisy ones can be a right PITA

It's all a bit rubbish.

The noise test on the label is DRIVE BY noise test.

One of the ways the tyre manufacturers can reduce drive by noise is by directing the noise into the arches... thus increasing internal noise.

Also, it doesn't measure frequency, just dB. This means at the same dB level, a low hum can go unnoticed, where as a higher pitched whine will be bloody annoying.

As always, user reviews are best. But I'm bias wink

Thanks folks, I kind of understand now, basically if you drive a 4x4 or a bigger vehicle you would probably want quieter tyres, but for the majority of car drivers it’s not that important, Price, grip and fuel efficiency is the key factors I think!!

I look for good grip, especially in the wet, tyre noise (it can make a big difference in my experience and I'm not talking 4x4's) and a decent price.

Fuel efficiency has never come in to it.

Wet grip first for me. Noise and efficiency are a factor, but more in the sense that a tyre with a seriously worse noise or efficiency score is disregarded from consideration if others are better.
Generally there is cost, grip, efficiency, noise and wear. You can't have the best for all those, choosing the best of some of those is likely to have a large deficit on the remaining ones.

Me

I like a blend of performance, grip and noise. As you might have guessed, I don't buy cheap tyres.

Noise Class and DB rating are the two figures I look at first on my every day cars, E Class, ML, X3 etc.

The difference between a noise class 1 tyre that is rated at 68db vs Class 3 with 72db is huge!!
