Shogun Pinin - jerking when not under acceleration

Hi,
My wife has an 02 Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin (yes......) which is her pride and joy. I drove it for the first time in months the other day and often noticed a large 'jerk' when I took my foot off the accelerator - cruising towards a roundabaout for example. It felt almost as though a gear was 'catchng up' with the revs and engaging.
Anybody got any ideas what it may be?
