Cherished number plate but not worth MOTing
Discussion
Hi guys,
My old car has a cherished number plate but unfortunately I had let the MOT run out on it and it simply isn't worth MOTing again, the parts it needs are around equal to the value of the car!
My understanding is no mot no chance of getting the plate off, is this the case considering I'm going to be scrapping it?
Thanks

Is this a very recent development?

I ask because I was given a car with a cherished plate a few years back, used it as my daily until it was uneconomical to repair, then left it sorned for 18 months or so as the previous owner wanted the plates back but we were having trouble being in the same place at the same time. To cut it short, we finally met up and got the paperwork done in August/September (can't remember which), and the DVLA just transferred the reg, issued me a new one, and that was that.
The car the plate was transferred from hadn't had an MOT since before its tax expired, but we had no problem getting it done.
My vehicle has no MOT and/or is not currently taxed. Can I sell its registration?
If the donor vehicle’s tax and / or MOT has expired you can still sell your registration number provided all the following conditions apply at the time of the transfer application:-
The tax expired within six months of the transfer application
The MOT was valid at the time the tax expired
You were the registered keeper of the vehicle at the time the tax expired
The tax expired naturally, i.e., you didn’t apply for a refund
Note: If the MOT has expired, you can still sell your registration mark provided the road tax is valid at the time of the transfer application and that you were the registered keeper of the vehicle at the time the MOT expired.

Well, only the third of those was true in my case, and it went through without a peep. Just sent off the form and three weeks later, all done and dusted. If the donor vehicle’s tax and / or MOT has expired you can still sell your registration number provided all the following conditions apply at the time of the transfer application:-

That's why I was wondering if the rules on this have changed in past few months.
I have just (as in, during December) removed the cherished plate from a vehicle that I put on a SORN 18 months ago. The MOT had run out over a year ago.
In fact, it was a car whose engine blew, so I broke for parts during that period.
I sent a cover note to the DVLA along with the normal reg transfer form simply stating I hadn't used the car and wasn't planning to so could I remove the plate before I sell.
Not even a query. 2 weeks later, my retention form arrived.
Don't sweat it, just fill out the form and post along with your V5.

If your car is written off in an accident it would have no chance of passing an MOT, but because it had one in the recent past then you can transfer the plate. I don't really see what the difference is
In this day and age of computer databases everyone should be able to select a 7 character string as long as it is not already taken. What does it matter that it used to be on a different vehicle? Everyone could have a 'personalized plate' and all the car age related one-upmanship would cease.

This is good to hear cause it's pretty much the situation I'm in! Cheers guys I'll give this a go, if not because I really want the plate back I'll be looking for some second hand bits! In fact, it was a car whose engine blew, so I broke for parts during that period.
