My Dad has an 03 Citroen C5 Estate, it's been maintained fastidiously (owned from new). The only thing letting it down at the moment is the Tail Gate will no longer support itself.
A quick Google suggests new struts are £100 a piece from Citroen, steep.
I've also come across a few posts suggesting getting the originals Re-Gassed.

Does anyone have any experience of having them repaired?

Why on earth would you look at a Main Dealer? I have used SGS-Engineering for a few different struts in the past, and they are nowhere near that price. Mine were about twenty quid each, which I suspect is cheaper than a repair.

Another one for SGS here.

2 routes, remove struts yourself & post them off, returned pretty quickly

or

I popped by on way past, 15 minute stop for a re gas, problem solved.

About £25 I think.

Any decent auto spares will do them, £25 or so usually

They aren't your average Struts. They are 'Special'. SGS only list 08 onwards which used a normal style strut.

You seem very intent on spending a lot of money.
I bet if you ring SGS they'll have one to suit.

Interesting, so they have lasted ok then?

I wonder if they just force air past the seals then as there's no obvious way of pressurisng them? :wonder:

Just to throw a spanner in the works, does the C5 Estate have Hydraulic struts ? We used to have a 2001 car, with a saggy tailgate, I have a feeling it's a torsion type spring in the roof.

You might want to make sure the sealing hasn't degraded otherwise regassing will do fk all.

Well, give them a ring then. I doubt a £12.99 gas strut is going to turn into a £100 gas strut just for an estate. Might even be the same part.

Found one -

I'll be contacting SGS, I'm sure they'll be able to supply one. I just wondered if it was worth re-gassing and how long it lasts.

Its not quite as simple as that. The estate struts are mounted under the roof, to access them you need to remove the headlining, not an easy job. I tried to get some for mine a couple of years ago and there are no pattern parts, there were at £100+ but they are no longer available. I would suspect the reason for that is that nobody can be bothered to replace them as the cost of having them fitted would exceed the value of the car

Most of the early C5s suffer from this problem, some will work OK in the summer or when the car is facing down hill, I use a stick to prop mine open in the winter.

The cheap ones advertised are for the saloon only which has conventional vertical struts or the later estate, post 07 which has the same.

Citroen don't like to do things the easy way do they?!
